SUMMARY

Under the direction and supervision of the Director of Food Services, the Food Services Worker/Cook is a member of the Food Services team that provides meals, customer service, and a clean and cheerful environment for students and staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Prepares salad bar. This includes spooning pre-made products into serving containers, peeling hard-boiled eggs, preparing salads, and peeling and cutting fruits and vegetables.
  • Prepares certain items for catering events, such as fruit trays, vegetable trays, dips, and cookies/pastries, and helps set up when requested by the Director.
  • Scans students/staff cards for purchases and accurately ring up items.
  • Serves food from the hotline, assists customers, answers questions, and retrieves requested items.
  • Stock items in the serving area. Before serving, stocks of paper products, snack items, dairy products, beverages, and other items must be replenished.
  • Sets up and maintains serving areas. Post the day's menu with prices, and at predetermined times, set up a salad bar and put out serving utensils, condiments, bread, and desserts. Monitors serving areas, refills as needed, and keeps area neat and clean.
  • Cleans work areas and serving areas as needed. Periodically wash carts, sinks, shelves, refrigerator doors, and sides. Clean the salad bar, steam table, coffee dispensers, and all serving areas.
  • Assists in washing pots, pans, salad bar inserts, utensils, and other items used in day-to-day operations.
  • Assists with catering as needed, such as setting up trays of pastries, cookies, vegetables, dips, fruits, etc. Makes coffee and prepares sandwiches, salads, and other food items. Gather paper products, condiments, and other items as needed. Delivers and sets up food and beverages within the building as required. Catering events may take place in the evening and on weekends.
  • Follows closing procedures. Turns off equipment, locks refrigerators, and closes windows.
  • Always follow allergy awareness policies. Adheres to all rules to protect students and staff with food allergies and sensitivities. Be knowledgeable about all menu and food product ingredients and be ready to advise customers. Follows all safe food handling practices to prevent cross-contact with allergens.
  • Adheres to all kosher dietary laws. Non-kosher food or any meat is not allowed in the kitchen. Only uses food products and cooking tools/knives supplied by Gann. The above responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to do this job.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS

  • Ability to work with various people, including students, parents, faculty, staff, and vendors.
  • Must have excellent customer service skills.
  • Knowledgeable about a food service operation's structure, fast pace, and flow.
  • Understanding of food safety/sanitation requirements and procedures.
  • Knowledgeable about food allergies and practices to prevent cross-contact.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Must be proficient in English to carry out work as assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical demands include stooping, bending, reaching for, ability to lift at least 50lbs, and standing for extended periods are common.
