Pay Range: $22.02/hr. - $27.52/hr.

Workdays & Hours: Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm; Some evening/weekend work required.

A Zoning Planning Assistant job is available with the City of Fort Worth Development Services Department. The Zoning Section is responsible for providing recommendations to the Zoning Commission and City Council on zoning changes for the city, which determine how the city will achieve its vision of being the most livable and best managed city in the country. This section directly supports the city’s Zoning Administrator and the Zoning Commission. However, the planning assistant may also assist other boards and commissions that the department supports on an as needed basis. The planning assistant’s role is pivotal in helping to facilitate these responsibilities. The chosen candidate must be detail-oriented, highly-organized, and have the ability to prioritize multiple tasks. Finally, this position must have the ability to communicate in writing and verbally with internal staff and the general public.

The primary purpose of this position is to assist in maintaining the integrity of the City’s land use regulations through the administration of the Zoning Ordinance. This includes evaluating applications for rezoning, sending legal notifications, and customer interface.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma/GED
  • Two (2) years in Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, or Landscape Architecture.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting boards and committees.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Microsoft Office skills.
  • GIS and Accela Automation skills
  • Bilingual English/Spanish.

The Zoning Planning Assistant job responsibilities include:  

  • Provide exemplary customer service to internal staff and the general public.
  • Provide technical assistance on how to access zoning information and apply for zoning changes to property owners, developers, community groups and to other city staff.
  • Prepare and post meeting agendas in accordance with city and state requirements.
  • Help coordinate data from multiple sources to assist the assistant director, manager and planners.
  • Review applications for completeness and accuracy; enter application information into Accela Automation and process payments.
  • Provide on-going staff support to the City's Zoning Commission and periodically assist with other boards and commission that the department supports on an as needed basis.
  • Prepare meeting minutes and decision letters.
  • Coordinate the intake of applications and track their status utilizing Accela.
  • Coordinate the sending of public hearing notices to the newspaper, property owners and registered community organizations in accordance with city and state requirements.
  • Perform technical tasks related to planning activities including the development and utilization of maps, plans, computer files and presentations and assist with research requests.

Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, repetitive motions, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling and lifting.

Physical Demands

Light Work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly having to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for the Sedentary Work category and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated Light Work.
