COVID - Vaccine Required - all boosters required.

Mission Statement

Founded in 1938, the Boys & Girls Club of Newark (BGCN) is a non-profit organization working with youth to help them achieve academic success, build good character and citizenship, and lead healthy lifestyles.

Youth Development Specialists will work closely with children.

Essential Function :

The Boys & Girls Club of Newark (BGCN) is currently seeking energetic, organized, and compassionate individuals who are interested in serving as positive role models in the lives of children.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old. Job duties for this part-time / seasonal position include but are not limited to : creating and maintaining a safe physical & emotional environment, direct supervision of children during all program hours and the planning, and implementation of our core program areas - Academic Success, Good Character & Citizenship, Healthy Life Skills and the Arts.

Also, supports each member with distant learning (providing technical and in classroom support while they are learning remotely with their schools), providing homework / power hour support, supporting interns with meditation, physical, social and emotional activities.

Overall, our goal is to provide support to our families, all while ensuring our members have the best experience during these uncertain times and promoting the safest standards by following COVID-19, State, Local and Licensing guidelines.

The duties listed below are the primary duties of this position but are not all the duties that may be required. BGCN reserves the right to change, reduce or expand the duties of this position at any time.

Specifically, the primary duties are :

  • Willingness to serve as an ambassador to the Boys & Girls Club of Newark
  • Energetic & positive "can-do" attitude
  • Maturity and patience when working with children.
  • Has a sound knowledge of good teaching, youth development and behavior management practices
  • Experience working in youth development, recreational leadership or similar
  • Can work as part of a team, with strong collaboration skills
  • Ability to work with youth and families from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to supervise groups of children in a recreational setting, both indoors and outdoors
  • Strong tutoring background in English, Mathematics and Science
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Strong computer and technical skills
  • Promote a physically and emotionally safe environment for youth
  • Provide guidance and positive role modeling to our members
  • Stimulate members' interest and positive participation in activities
  • Support each member with distant learning (providing technical computer and in classroom support while they are learning remotely with their schools)
  • Provide home-work / power hour support
  • Implement and actively supervise programs, services and activities for members
  • Assist with creating and planning programs and activities
  • Recognize and respond quickly to unacceptable behavior - arguing, fighting etc. - using positive discipline and other techniques as outlined in trainings
  • Complete accident or incident reports when appropriate according to BGCN procedures
  • Assist in the maintenance of the facility, equipment and supplies
  • Be prompt, courteous, and neat during working hours, according to uniform guidelines
  • Maintain an inventory of all program equipment and supplies and relay shortages to supervisor
  • Recommend and requisition supplies needed for assigned area
  • Complete daily reports on department activities and attendance
  • Work with staff on special events and facilitate programs in any department when needed
  • Complete any required or mandated trainings and / or professional development
  • Engage parents regarding opportunities and expectations of club members, as well as general club participation.
  • Adhere to all Child Care Licensing requirements and policies / procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook and elsewhere
  • Ability to attend full-day field trips once-a-week, as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications :

  • Associates Degree or equivalent required - Minimum High School Diploma
  • Two years 'experience working with youth and families required in a school / afterschool setting
  • Attend staff trainings outside of regular work hours
  • Must pass Child Abuse Background Check (CARI )
  • CPR certificate - preferred
  • Strong Tutoring background in English, Mathematics and Science
  • Required Medical Physical Examination with negative TB test
  • COVID - Vaccination required, including all relevant boosters
  • Must understand and appreciate the mission of The Boys & Girls Club of Newark
