Position Description

The College of Human Sciences at Texas Tech University invites nominations and applications for the Founding Chairperson of the Department of Interdisciplinary Human Sciences.* The Chairperson (Chair) reports to the Dean of the College of Human Sciences and is responsible for the department's academic programs, governance, planning, faculty, staff, and student recruitment, and financial affairs. The Chair will provide leadership and cooperate with faculty to create and promote the new Department of Interdisciplinary Human Sciences which will become one of seven departments in the College of Human Sciences at Texas Tech University. The Chair acts as the department's advocate to fulfill the needs and missions of the department, college, and university and participates as a team member on the College of Human Sciences Administrative Team. The Chair helps build and foster a positive work culture in the department and supports the continuous professional development of each faculty and staff member to encourage the development of their full potential. They lead the faculty in pursuit of sponsored projects funding, developing a flow of research and creative activity from the department, and mentor faculty in promoting their research programs. The Chair represents the department to the students, faculty, staff, administration, and profession. Their duties including participating in development activities and developing strong ties with alums and stakeholders.
The Chair is a departmental faculty member with a 50% appointment. The position is a 9-month, tenured faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor to begin January 1, 2025. Chairs are expected to maintain a research program and contribute to teaching activities.
*The name of this new department is pending Board of Regents approval.

About the College

About the Department/School/Area

The mission of the Department of Interdisciplinary Human Sciences is to unify health and human sciences through education and practice, and to equip students with knowledge, skills, and abilities to foster healthy human connections. The department will provide structure for the governance and support of six-degree programs in Family and Consumer Sciences Education (B.S., M.S., and Ph.D.) and Human Sciences (B.A.A.S., B.S., and M.S.). Additional offerings include a B.S. in Human Sciences/B.S. in Nursing dual degree, two accelerated bachelor's to master's degree programs, and three undergraduate minors in Biobehavioral Health and Wellness, Extension Education, and Human Sciences in Nursing. Student enrollment is approximately 1,066 undergraduate and 63 graduate students. The new department will have 12 full-time faculty and adjunct faculty who work to accomplish collective goals.
The Center for Adolescent Resiliency reflects the College's commitment to engaged scholarship through its interdisciplinary approach to promoting positive youth development. The Center works closely with area schools and community organizations to address the wellness and developmental needs of early and middle adolescents through research-based programs, services, and training for youth professionals.
The Curriculum Center for Family and Consumer Sciences produces and disseminates instructional materials that support family and consumer sciences programs and to provides pre-service and in-service professional development to educators and administrators within those program areas. The Center supports teachers with a broad range of resources and is the only curriculum center in the nation that specializes in the development of curriculum materials for family and consumer sciences content areas.

Major/Essential Functions

As outlined in the university strategic plan and in line with TTU's strategic priorities to engage and empower a diverse student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service.

Faculty Qualifications

  • Applicants must have a doctoral degree in family sciences, human sciences, or a closely related discipline such as education or community health.
  • Demonstrated record of effectiveness as a teacher, a record of peer-reviewed publication and/or peer-reviewed creative activity which has contributed to the discipline or field of study, to the candidate's intellectual and artistic development, and to the quality of the academic enterprise, a record of professional service appropriate to the discipline.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Academic qualifications to meet Texas Tech University tenure expectations at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
  • Previous leadership and/or administrative experience
