POSITION OVERVIEW:
House Bill 2497 passed by the 87th Texas Legislature established the 1836 Project Advisory Committee (the Committee). The Director of the 1836 Project Committee is responsible for telling the story of Texas, promoting the 1836 Project initiatives, and facilitating its meetings and initiatives across the state. This position supports the mission of the Texas Education Agency to improve outcomes for all public-school students in the state by providing leadership, guidance, and support to school systems as it relates to the 1836 Project Committee.

This position will support the Executive Director of Governmental Relations in creating and implementing stakeholder strategy that effectively reaches multiple audiences to drive awareness, engagement, and feedback on a variety of 1836 initiatives. This position is responsible for identifying high priority projects that require cross agency communications and an engagement plan and partnering with local historical organizations across Texas to co-develop content with the 1836 Project Committee as the lead organization. The Director of the 1836 Project Committee will represent the Committee across the state to further their initiatives.

This position will propose, develop, implement and refine the outreach strategy for the initiatives of the 1836 Project Committee, including the development of strategic stakeholder partnerships. This position will manage the process of engagement and direct outreach for the 1836 Project Committee and will work with program-specific stakeholder engagement to maximize efforts to build awareness, identify collaboration and integration points, and jointly manage towards performance metrics. This position reports to the Executive Director of Governmental Relations with a significant collaboration and direction structure tied to the 1836 Project Commission.

The Director of the 1836 Project Committee works under minimal supervision, with latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment, and performs related work as assigned.

Flexible work location within the state of Texas may be considered for qualified candidates.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Manage projects for the 1836 Project Commission and ensures timely completion of project deliverables - Works with internal staff to facilitate information for initiatives.
2. Establish and maintain relationships with state agency staff and outside education organizations with a focus on 1836 Project initiatives - Works with the Committee to ensure all requests are responded to in a timely manner, typically the same day; furthers the goals and objectives of the Committee by working collaboratively with Legislative staff and building trust with local historical associations/organizations, the Office of the Governor and other state agencies.
3. Review and edit 1836 Project Committee materials as requested for governmental entities, policy stakeholders, and public presentation - Assists in the review, preparation, and refinement of materials for meetings, speeches and public presentations for the Chair and members of the Committee; works within a team on special one-time and ongoing projects which may include planning and coordinating multiple presentations and disseminating information to appropriate stakeholders.
4. Prepare, monitor, and facilitate 1836 Project events, briefings, meetings, and presentations - Monitors and facilitates Committee meetings in coordination with other members of the Governmental Relations team. Works with the Governmental Relations team to ensure state agency staff attending the meetings, events, briefings, and/or presentations are well prepared to answer questions on their subject matter; helps ensure the completion and close out of deliverables from meetings.
5. Ensure success of the 1836 Project Committee efforts - Assists in developing project plans, project management scheduling; and reviews policies, practices, and procedures for the 1836 Project with an eye toward codification and continuous process improvement of the Committees initiatives; creates and develops the Committee’s newsletter; regularly updates the Committee’s webpage, legislative contacts and responses log, policies, and procedures as necessary.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university
  • Experience: At least five (5) years of experience in working in communications, business or project management with a focus on collaborating with stakeholders and organizations at the state and local level.
  • Substitutions: An advanced degree may substitute for two years of required experience.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Share the belief that all Texas students can achieve at high levels and are able to succeed in college, career, or the military.
  • A passion for Texas history is required.
  • Strong inter-personal skills, relationship-building and verbal/written communication skills.
  • Skill in compiling, evaluating, and presenting information in a compelling way, as well as the ability to compose and tailor clear and concise communications for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to prioritize work streams and collaborate with a diverse group of individuals at different seniority levels, with discretion, while managing multiple projects is required.
  • Proficient in applicable software, specifically Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • A desire to self-reflect, give/receive feedback and continuously improve.
  • Ability to engage in a collaborative, results-oriented team environment.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws related to public education curriculum as well as the development of the TEKS and background in Texas History is preferred.
