Senior Manager, Packaging Development Engineering (Mansfield, MA)

In this position, you will provide leadership in the design, development and implementation of cost- effective packaging across all assigned product lines.

What will you be doing?

  • Define, develop, lead and implement packaging designs across product lines in collaboration with the product development teams. New designs must meet product design requirements including labeling and sterilization.
  • Able to supervise all packaging engineering activities related to new product development
  • Work directly with R&D Managers, Process Engineering Managers, and Product Managers to develop new packaging designs that are cost effective and still meet aggressive time line requirements
  • Provide continuous engineering support for packaging on existing products
  • Designs package components and develops packaging systems for new and existing medical device products
  • Coordinates with Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance the requirements for package inserts, Q.C. procedures, testing for packages and/or packaging materials, labeling for IDE submissions, etc.
  • Reviews and approves all packaging/labeling specifications and other technical documentation for assigned product lines.
  • Mentor and develop junior packaging engineering staff and technicians
  • Support Operations in optimizing packaging related equipment and processes in our manufacturing facilities
  • Reports any deviation in product or process, of which they becomes aware, to their manager or the Quality department
  • Completes all necessary training in the area of Quality and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice)
  • Immediately reports any dissatisfaction or complaint which is brought to their attention from a customer or patient regarding Smith & Nephew product (e.g. in terms of quality, durability, reliability, safety or performance) to the complaints department
  • Complies with all health, safety and environmental policies, procedures and job hazard analyses applicable to specific job activities; including medical evaluations as required by job function
  • Travel: Domestic/International – Up to 15%

What will you need to be successful?

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Packaging Engineering or Packaging Sciences or relevant degree (BS, BA, or MS)
  • Minimum of 5 years of packaging related experience within Medical Devices, Biologics, or Pharmaceutical Industry.
  • 3 years minimum of management experience of direct / indirect management required.
  • CPP and Six sigma certification preferred
  • Knowledge of package performance and integrity testing per ASTM standards (ASTM D4169, ISTA 3A, & ISO 11607-1 and 2)
