Job Description
Syracuse University and SUNY ESF are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Undergraduate Research Assistant to join our dynamic team for an exciting research project focused on investigating the interplay between the built environment and the overall wellbeing of marginalized communities. This research project, funded by the Lender Center MetLife Grant, aims to develop innovative solutions to enhance community wellness through a multidisciplinary approach. As a Research Assistant, you will play a pivotal role in advancing our project’s goals by actively contributing to data collection, community engagement, and design development. This position offers a unique opportunity to be part of a groundbreaking initiative that strives to create positive, lasting impacts on underserved communities.
Qualifications
  • Pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture, sociology, environmental science).
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proficiency in data analysis software and GIS tools is a plus.
  • Passion for community-based research and a commitment to promoting inclusivity and wellbeing in marginalized communities.
Job Specific Qualifications
  • Knowledge and Intermediate skills with ArcGIS Pro & City Engine.
  • Knowledge and skills with Adobe Creative Suite and Graphic Design.
Responsibilities
  • Data Collection and Analysis: In collaboration with the research team, you will assist in the collection and analysis of geospatial data related to physical elements affecting community wellbeing, such as air quality, temperature, and tree canopy scores. Your responsibilities will include managing data, performing statistical analyses, and contributing to the development of a digital interface that allows residents to visualize the impact of these variables on their daily lives.
  • Community Engagement: Engaging with marginalized communities is at the heart of our research. You will actively participate in community outreach activities, including organizing informational sessions, workshops, and community meetings. Your role will be crucial in building trust and fostering meaningful partnerships with community members to ensure their insights shape our research approach.
  • Design Development and Prototyping: Collaborating closely with structural engineering consultants, you will be involved in design experimentation and prototyping of structures tailored to address community-specific needs. This includes testing materials, exploring different structural types, and conducting workshops with community representatives to ensure designs align with their requirements.
Physical Requirements
This position does not have physical requirements. The assistant will be allotted computer lab space to conduct this research.
