At Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village our mission is to cultivate leadership capacity. Our programs in Academics, Athletics, and the Arts are taught by local professionals who dedicate their time to reinvesting their skills and knowledge and giving back to the young people. By developing and investing in youth, we desire to transform Flint into a just and equitable city. Our doors are open to everyone! Covering 10 different areas, we offer many different programs that youth can choose from. Pay for this position will be based on experience.

Job Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Math Instructor to join our team. The Math Instructor will be responsible for planning and delivering high-quality math instruction to students of various ages and proficiency levels. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mathematics, excellent teaching skills, and a passion for helping students succeed in their math education.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and teach engaging and effective math lessons that align with curriculum standards and objectives, incorporating a variety of instructional strategies and resources to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Develop lesson plans, assignments, and assessments that promote critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and mathematical reasoning among students.
  • Provide clear explanations of mathematical concepts, formulas, and procedures, using examples, diagrams, and real-world applications to enhance understanding and relevance.
  • Differentiate instruction to accommodate the individual learning styles, abilities, and interests of students, providing additional support or enrichment as needed to ensure all students are challenged and successful.
  • Monitor student progress and performance through ongoing assessment, feedback, and evaluation, adjusting instruction and intervention strategies accordingly to address areas of strength and weakness.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages active participation, collaboration, and mutual respect among students.
  • Use technology effectively to enhance instruction, facilitate learning, and provide opportunities for student engagement and exploration in mathematics.
  • Communicate regularly with students, parents, and colleagues regarding class expectations, assignments, progress reports, and upcoming assessments.
  • Provide additional support and intervention to students who are struggling with math concepts or experiencing academic challenges, offering tutoring, study groups, or other resources as needed.
  • Collaborate with other math instructors, administrators, and support staff to develop and implement effective math programs, initiatives, and interventions to support student achievement and success.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, professional development activities, and school-wide initiatives to stay current with best practices in math education and contribute to the ongoing improvement of the math curriculum and instruction.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in mathematics, education, or related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience teaching mathematics at the middle school, high school, or college level.
  • Strong content knowledge and proficiency in a wide range of mathematical concepts, including algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and/or discrete mathematics.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly and engage students in meaningful mathematical discourse.
  • Dedication to student success and a passion for helping students develop confidence, competence, and enthusiasm for mathematics.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction and provide personalized support to meet the diverse needs of students, including those with varying levels of mathematical proficiency and background knowledge.
  • Proficiency in using technology tools and resources to enhance math instruction and facilitate learning, including graphing calculators, interactive whiteboards, educational software, and online resources.
  • Patience, empathy, and enthusiasm for working with students of diverse backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles.
  • Certification in teaching mathematics (preferred).
  • Willingness to undergo background checks and complete any required certifications or training.
