Job Title: Director Construction

Reports To: VP of Construction, CEO and CFO

Location: California

Coordination: Construction, Projects, Finance and Clients

Summary of Role:

The Sustineo Director of Construction provides a broad scope of construction-related supervision on all company projects, involving multiple internal departments as well as client communications. Duties consist of meeting with clients to report job-specific progress and directing various office-related and construction site tasks. The director of construction is in charge of determining manpower requirements for multiple projects and ensures that Sustineo's goals are met to scheduled benchmarks, for overall company success. Included responsibilities involve reviewing and managing budgets, business contracts, plan sets, and overseeing the schedules of subcontractors and vendors. Qualifications include a degree in construction management or a similar field of study and significant years of experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage and guide the Construction, Project Management and Procurement teams that perform market research, explore future technologies benchmarking, and establishes key vendor relationships to strengthen Sustineo’s ability to stay ahead of the market and to respond and adapt as needed.
  • Define spending visibility by category and future strategies to maximize cost-saving opportunities.
  • Define supplier strategy for critical equipment, including distribution, contracts, and rebate programs.
  • Partner with executive leadership on strategic direction and goals for department success
  • Negotiate national supply agreements and develop strategic partnerships with vendors. This includes working with finance groups (PPA) to strengthen national buying power.
  • Responsible for developing purchasing strategies, contract negotiation, supplier relations, distribution channel evaluation, and ensuring procurement standards are upheld.
  • Day-to-day management and mentorship of the procurement Electrical, and Mechanical Project Management team
  • Reviews design documents, identify key subcontractors, investigates sites, analyzes labor markets, identify long-lead items, develop bid packages, develop schedules, develop site utilization plan, and conducts pre-bid conferences.
  • Build and maintain key relationships with Operations and Estimating teams and collaborate with them to maintain relationships with vendors/suppliers at various levels to achieve and maintain favorable commercial terms, pricing, lead times as well as identifying risk items and developing mitigation plans to address such risk.
  • Sets up project schedule of values, approves miscellaneous job expenditures, prepares monthly owner requisitions, manages change order process, administers owner purchase program, manages project assets, and enforces company bonding and insurance policies.
  • Complies with contract requirements, coordinates with corporate scheduling, prepares and distributes detailed project schedules, prepares resource-loaded schedules, and develops look-ahead schedules.
  • Mentors, provides direction to the staff, disseminates company policy, and promotes employee morale.
  • Oversees document control, RFI process, and critical items list.
  • Conducts trade pre-construction meetings, coordinates subcontractors and vendors, coordinates permit inspections, maintains subcontractor relationships, manages loss control (safety) program, manages shop drawing process.
  • Reports regularly to Owner and complies with client's needs.
  • Supports Project Management in project closeout and post construction services, oversees certificate of occupancy and other government approvals, “As-Built” Drawings, operation manuals, completes punch list, coordinates Owner move-in and start-up, obtains and delivers warranties.
  • Participates in company-sponsored events, participates in task team committees as well as industry-related organizations.
  • Support Project management with training programs, continuing education programs, participates in seminars and conferences.
  • Ability to manage several construction projects at a time.
  • Recruit, develop and train field management teams.
  • Bring existing general contractors, sub-contractors and other business relationships to generate new opportunities.
  • Maintain and transition existing business relationships for continued growth.

Related Experience and Educational Requirements:

Minimum Requirements:

  • 10 years in the Solar industry (required)
  • 10 years of Solar Project Management (required)
  • Utility Scale Solar: 9 years (Required)
  • Utility Scale Solar EPC: 7 years (Required)
  • 2-3 years as a Director of New and Pre-Construction
  • 2-3 years of Business Development background
  • Successful track record directing small, medium, and large-scale EPC projects
  • Strong knowledge base in Construction law (CA, AZ, New Jersey)
  • General business practices knowledge
  • Professional communication with clients
  • Biggest MW / GW project Managed: 10 years (Required)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Recommended NAPCEP certification

Other Pertinent Information:

Sustineo will consider the position to be staffed full-time in California, either at our San Diego headquarters or via remote work configurations with commuting as needed for job site inspections or to San Diego headquarters for regular leadership meetings.

In compliance with all states and cities that require transparency of pay, the base compensation for this position ranges from $110,000-$140,000 annually and includes a total benefits package. Salary and benefits package determined based on skills, work experience and qualifications.
