Job Summary: The Department of University Police and Public Safety at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Security Services Assistant 1 / Security Guard.
Security Services Assistants patrol State facilities during times when the premises are open to business or to the public to detect security incidents and to deter criminal activities by means of presence and witness.
Illustrative Duties
- Answer questions and give directions to faculty, staff, students, patients and visitors to assist them in finding appropriate offices and services.
- Question persons who appear to be loitering, and may order persons without legitimate purposes to leave the premises to prevent or limit loitering.
- Control access to facility and offices by confirming the identity of visitors, and mail and supply couriers, maintaining a visitor log during regular business hours, and operating building security access and surveillance systems.
- Issue employee identification cards, and patient, visitor and vendor pass'; and maintain the integrity of such identification systems.
- Operate detection equipment to screen individuals and prevent passage of prohibited articles into restricted areas.
- Inspect buildings and facilities to detect potential fire and safety hazards, and report deficiencies to higher level security personnel or agency management.
- Patrol assigned post and inspects the premises to deter property damage by means of presence, witness, and takes immediate preventive actions, as necessary.
- As directed or prescribed in guidelines or routine, locks doors and windows and closes fire doors and smoke barriers to deter and prevent intrusion, and criminal and accidental loss or damage of State property.
- As directed, may turn lights on or off, or start and shut off equipment to ensure that facilities are ready for use and properly is maintained.
- Escort or provide aid to physically handicapped persons to ease their entry into or exit from buildings.
- Respond to calls for assistance from faculty, staff, students and visitors in handling emergency situations; administer first aid, and summon nurses, doctors, and emergency services to ensure that sick or injured persons receive appropriate care.
- Call police or fire departments in cases of emergency, such as fire or presence of unauthorized persons; and may assist in responding to the incident.
- Direct people along designated evacuation routes to safe places to ensure timely evacuation during drills and emergencies.
- May operate fire extinguishers or standpipe hoses to extinguish fires, and assist in the evacuation of facility in the event of a fire.
- Prepare written reports of shift activities, including actions taken to report or resolve incidents or problems.
- When required, may operate a motor vehicle to support patrol or security incident response activities.
Required Qualifications: - Open Competitive: registration as a Security Guard by the New York State Department of State;
- Candidates must meet established physical and medical requirements for appointment to the position.
- Appointees to this position may be required to undergo periodic medical examinations to reassess their ability to perform the essential duties of the position.

Salary Grade/Rank: SG-6
S alary Range: As per civil service guidelines
- Hiring Rate: $36,760 Base Salary plus $1,827 Location Pay (Full-Time 1.0FTE)
