We are seeking a VP, Controller to direct the daily operations of the Accounting Department. They will lead cross-functional teams and be responsible for functions relating to accounting, financial reporting, and financial analysis.

Workplace: Hybrid environment. 3 days on-site, 2 days remote.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists the EVP/Chief Financial Officer by ensuring the credit union's compliance with general accounting principles and adherence to federal and governing rules and regulations by compiling and analyzing data, timely and accurate reporting, and by conducting internal audits of financial records
  • Oversees employees through effective organizing, coaching, counseling, recognizing, appraising, and hiring and/or terminating in cooperation with the Human Resources department
  • Ensures general ledger accuracy
  • Reviews and approves credit union and staff expenditures
  • Prepares and approves journal entries
  • Creates and reviews the calculations of the Allowance for Credit Losses on a monthly basis as well as makes necessary adjustments according to CECL. Write quarterly analysis.
  • Responsible for submitting monthly financial reports for the Board of Directors. Ensures accuracy of financial reporting packages
  • Responsible for all regulatory reporting including the Call Report (5300)
  • Reviews and reports on budget variances
  • Manages vendor relationships by reviewing, negotiating and evaluating contractual terms and conducting due diligence
  • Performs financial review of vendors from other departments as part of the Credit Union due diligence process and of other credit unions for loan participations.
  • Represents the department as the primary contact for internal audits, external financial audits and regulatory exams. Provides information, data collection and reports for audits and examinations
  • Represent Accounting for all corporate projects.
  • Analyzes peer financial performance and reports findings or trends
  • Achieves a minimum of "Satisfactory" rating on internal audits and examinations
  • Accomplishes the credit union's mission by completing relevant duties as needed when requested by management or other staff members
  • Stays current on all accounting guidance. Effectively implements any new accounting guidance. This may include understanding and interpreting new accounting standards, determining the impact of the new guidance on the Credit Union, implementing any new processes deemed necessary, developing new journal entries, ensuring accurate reporting and ensure any new controls needed are documented and implemented.
  • Attends monthly Management Leadership Meetings and Management Loan Committee / New Product Meetings as necessary
  • Handles all tax issues and reporting to the IRS

Essential Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration. Five (5) to eight (8) years of accounting experience in a supervisory capacity required. Experience in Credit Unions or Community Banks preferred, CPA required.

  • Proficient knowledge of financial and accounting theory
  • Proficient knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Practices
  • Advanced knowledge of regulatory environments affecting financial institutions, including those of the NCUA, FINRA, IRS, etc.
  • Advanced knowledge of credit union products, services, policies, regulations and procedures
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting systems, financial analysis software, and electronic delivery systems
  • Demonstrated computer and software skills
  • Proficient skill with using and analyzing data with spreadsheet software
  • Skill in gathering, analyzing and compiling moderately complex financial and statistical data
  • Skill with independent problem-solving
  • Ability to communicate and relate accounting concepts and procedures to non-accounting staff
  • Ability to provide managerial leadership to professional-, intermediate-, and entry-level staff
  • Ability to handle multiple and complex deadlines
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and articulately both orally and in writing
  • Ability to exercise tact and responsibility with handling confidential information
  • Ability to work with little supervision of daily activities
