Stony Brook University is Hiring a Lead Academic Advisor Near Stony Brook, NY

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):Master's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Three (3) years of full-time experience in academic advising, counseling, or student services in an educational setting. (Graduate student experience will be considered). Experience coordinating projects, programs, and/or events.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in higher education, student affairs, social work, counseling, or related discipline. Experience at the college or university level working with undergraduate students. Academic advising experience in a college or university setting. Experience teaching student-development related courses, facilitating workshops or leading presentations. Experience interacting with a diverse student population in an academic environment.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Academic Advisor provides individual academic advising to undergraduates in an assigned cohort. The Academic Advisor may teach a student success course and supports students in promoting their academic success. This position is an active leader and participant in assisting with the orientation and registration process, planning activities and events throughout the year, developing and implementing advising strategies, and building connections with faculty, staff, and student constituents. The incumbent provides a significant link to students transitioning from prior educational institutions and serves to strengthen student satisfaction and retention. The incumbent coordinates a functional assignment with specific activities related to student success and organizational goals.
The successful incumbent will have excellent student service and interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational and time-management skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.
Duties:

  • Academic Advising and Administration:
    • Provide high quality, proactive academic advising to undergraduates in an assigned cohort (i.e., first year, transfer, class year, academic standing, and/or other student grouping). Such advising will occur in individual and group settings on an ongoing basis, and will include regular communication about courses, majors, degree requirements, and policies/procedures.
    • Provide active support, follow-up, and strategies for success either individually or in a group setting, to students on academic action.
    • Serve as a general walk-in and/or appointment advisor for undergraduates as needed.
    • Support the training and development of Academic Advising Assistants and Interns via communicating policy, procedure, curricular, and other relevant knowledge. Participate in the planning and development of team meetings, training, and activities in conjunction with advising staff, campus partners, and other constituents.
    • Manage the administrative tasks, including programming, special initiatives, and budget.
  • Project Coordinator:
    • Coordinate functional assignment(s) within the unit. Examples may include seminar or program coordination, in-depth work with a specific student population, curriculum involvement, faculty/academic department collaborations, peer leadership opportunities, orientation, academic standing, or other operation, service, project, or retention-enhancing initiative.
  • Orientation and Registration:
    • Assist in the coordination and implementation of orientation sessions for incoming students in a particular cohort or group. Provide 1:1 and group advising for new students regarding academic planning, policies, course requirements, and the process of registration.
    • Participate in student orientation and opening weekend programs in January and the summer, including assisting in the development, planning, and implementation of new student related events and activities.
  • New Student Seminar Instruction:
    • Participate in relevant training and provide instruction for a new student seminar class.
    • Supervise, train, and evaluate an assigned teaching assistant.
  • Program Development and Event Planning:
    • Participate in initiating, planning, and developing events and activities which build community and support academic success.
    • Participate in one or more office committees.
  • Divisional support:
    • Participate in various Divisional and University programs and services including training/staff development, campus events, special events, admissions open houses, search committees, and University-wide committees.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
