Job Responsibilities

With our Agency's mission to support the recovery of people with mental illnesses, we provide a complete array of medical and support services for children, adults, and families throughout South Carolina.
This position is located at the Department of Mental Health - Inpatient Services, 220 Faison Drive, Columbia, SC 29203.
As the Building/Grounds Specialist II, you will serve as a supervisor in Environmental Services. You will be responsible for the maintenance of a sanitary, safe, and therapeutic environment in patient's areas.
Responsibilities for this Supervisor of Custodial Services include but are not limited to:
  • Plans work schedules, special projects, trains and maintains time sheet on all custodial staff assigned.
  • Analyzes problems and makes decisions taking in consideration standards of the JointCornmission, Employee Relations and EEO.
  • Completes EPMS process on employees under supervision and prepares disciplinary action notices when necessary.
  • Communicates with Nurse Managers and other disciplines to coordinate activities in assigned areas.
  • Performs inventory of supplies and equipment in assigned areas and orders when necessary.
  • Keeps an accurate book of SDS on all chemicals used by employees.
  • Reviews job applications, interviews selected applicants and makes recommendations for hiring.
Minimum and Additional Requirements

State Minimum Requirements: Experience in custodial, housekeeping or pest control work that is directly related to the area of employment.
Agency (Facility) Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma or GED and seven (7) years of custodial experience.

Additional Comments

Must have extensive knowledge of how to properly carry out tasks. Skilled in the use of cleaning equipment. Ab1e to keep accurate written records and knowledge of personnel requirements. Ability to plan and direct the work of subordinates' staff and ability to train new employees. Knowledge of safety practices relevant to the area of employment. Ability to work independently using skills and knowledge in decision making with minimum supervision. Ability to operate floor machine (wet/dry vacuum and other equipment used in the department). Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
