This position is located at Roanoke River Correctional Institution in Halifax County. This position will perform the full range of journey work duties associated with the preventive and routine maintenance on HVAC and refrigeration systems at both a medium and minimum custody facility. These facilities house and provides services for over 800 adult male offenders with a staff size of 372. This position maintains the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning equipment, installs new equipment, charge system refrigerants, replaces bearings, seals, and filters, lubricates as necessary and adjusts and balances the distribution system. This position maintains electronic/pneumatic equipment, performs all necessary testing, trouble shooting, and alignment repair of electrical/pneumatic system. Positions are expected to identify the cause of the problem, determine materials and tools needed and method of repair, and carry out repair procedures independently on most jobs. The HVAC Mechanic performs preventive maintenance functions as required and outlined in the preventative maintenance plans. Employee may train and/or supervise the work of offenders.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

  • Documented knowledge of practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, and repair of industrial air-conditioning and refrigeration systems.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution and control systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Requires current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.
