State of Missouri is Hiring an Attorney Near Jefferson, MO

This position will be filled at a salary no higher than the posted maximum salary.

Job Location: Central Office, 105 West Capitol Avenue, Jefferson City, MO

The assistant counsel performs legal functions for the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission (MHTC) and the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT). Serves at the pleasure of the Chief Counsel.

This opening is for one of our CAREER-LADDER positions which offers the opportunity for career advancement without having to participate in the competitive selection interview process. As you continue to learn, acquire new skills, and gain experience, you can be promoted to a higher-level position.

What you’ll do:

  • Assists the Commission and Department by drafting contracts, administrative rules, legislation, and legal memos/opinions.
  • Provides legal advice and counsel to the Commission and MoDOT staff on various legal issues.
  • Serves as a member of Chief Counsel's Office central office teams and task forces.
  • Represents the Commission in litigation regarding condemnation/inverse condemnation, tort liability, construction contracts, and human resources matters.
  • Accountable for meeting Chief Counsel's Office goals and performance measures.

All you need for success:

Minimum Qualifications

  • J.D. Degree
  • Admission to the Missouri Bar

Special Working Conditions:

  • Maintains attorney-client privilege.
  • Requires occasional travel, including statewide overnight travel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in administrative law and civil litigation.
  • Prior government service.
  • Excellent research and writing skills are preferred.
