State of Illinois is Hiring a REVENUE AUDITOR I Near Springfield, IL

The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) is seeking highly motivated individuals for Revenue Auditor positions. We seek candidates with a business-centered educational background - with a focus on accounting - and an ability to critically think, work independently, and effectively communicate both within the organization and to external stakeholders. IDOR administers Illinois tax laws and collects taxes in a fair, consistent, and efficient manner and an auditor’s duties and responsibilities are to ensure taxpayer compliance of various tax laws. This auditor position can include a variety of roles, from conducting field examinations to supporting functions of the audit process.

Essential Functions

  • Under general supervision, conducts audits of Illinois and/or out-of-state taxpayers subject to one or more taxes administered by the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR).
  • Examines appropriate operating asset, capital and liability accounts for completeness and accuracy.
  • Prepares detailed computerized reports upon conclusion of audits containing scope and procedures followed, extent of testing and summary of findings and recommendations.
  • Confers with taxpayers or their representatives to discuss findings and explain the significant provisions of the applicable tax act(s) as pertains to specific issues, obtain missing documents or obtain additional information.
  • Receives advanced classroom and/or on-the-job training involving new or revised statutes, rules and regulations, policies and procedures and audit methods and techniques to enhance auditing skills and knowledge.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires possession of a bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, public administration, business management, business education, economics, mathematics, statistics, or finance with a minimum of fifteen semester hours of progressive coursework in accounting. -OR- Requires possession of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of fifteen semester hours of progressive coursework in accounting including one class in taxation or auditing and five years of work experience in the Revenue Tax Specialist Series (specifically, one year as a Revenue Tax Specialist Trainee, three years as a Revenue Tax Specialist I and one year as a Revenue Tax Specialist II).
  • Requires successful completion of the Revenue Auditor Trainee program.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires the ability to successfully complete a tax compliance and fingerprint-based background check.
  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate. Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
  • Requires the ability to use and secure a state issued mobile device, e.g., cellular phone, laptop computer, tablet, etc.
  • This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires ability to lift and carry work above shoulder level to place on or remove from shelves.
