State of Illinois is Hiring a REVENUE TAX SPECIALIST I Near Springfield, IL

The Illinois Department of Revenue is seeking to hire a Revenue Tax Specialist for the Springfield Office in the Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI). BCI is a highly specialized law enforcement group that conducts criminal investigations into violations of the Illinois Tax Acts and associated financial crimes. The Revenue Tax Specialist position serves a support function for BCI investigations and operations. Related duties include report and restitution tracking, drafting related correspondence, obtaining data and generating reports.

Essential Functions

  • Under general supervision, performs technical analysis of routine and involved in-state and out-of-state taxpayer accounts involving the various taxes administered by the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR).
  • Utilizes various computer systems, including GenTax, other IDOR and state systems, various law enforcement systems, as well as the internet to access a multitude of databases to maintain, organize and correlate existing criminal case file data.
  • Confers by telephone, correspondence and/or in person with the Bureau of Criminal Investigations Agents, AAGs, court probation officers, taxpayer’s attorney and in rare instances the taxpayer to determine status of taxpayer accounts and restitution payments.
  • Assists higher level staff in preparing material for testimony at hearings.
  • As part of an on-the-job learning process assists in processing the more difficult/complex tax account cases.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings.
  • Compiles and prepares production statistical and informational reports.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires successful completion of the Revenue Tax Specialist Trainee program, which entails 12 months of agency training, and either: knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of college; OR four years of work experience providing tax related support functions within a program area at the Illinois Department of Revenue.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires the ability to successfully complete a tax compliance and fingerprint-based background check.
  • Requires the ability to use and secure a state issued mobile device, e.g., cellular phone, laptop computer, tablet, etc.
