Administrative Assistant (Capital Unit)

Full-time (40 hours) - $21.00 - $25.00 per hour D.O.E.

Boise, Idaho. As Idaho’s capital, Boise is at the heart of a growing metropolitan area of approximately 800,000 and serves as a regional commercial center. ABOUT US

The State Appellate Public Defender (SAPD) consists of two distinct units. The Capital Litigation Unit (CLU) represents indigent clients who have been convicted of murder and sentenced to death. The CLU handles both post-conviction proceedings in the trial court and appeals before the Idaho Supreme Court. The Appellate Unit (AU) represents indigent clients in juvenile, misdemeanor, felony, and post-conviction appeals.

POSITION & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Administrative Assistant performs a wide variety of administrative support functions, including providing clerical support to attorneys, the investigator, and the mitigation specialist in capital cases. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Answering, screening, and routing telephone calls from clients and the public;
  • Creating and maintaining records in the case management database;
  • Docketing and scanning incoming documents and legal filings;
  • Draft, finalize, proofread, and file legal documents and correspondence;
  • Coordinating, scheduling, and tracking client communications, both telephonic and in-person;
  • Scheduling and tracking court dates, telephonic conferences, appointments, case reviews, meetings, and filing deadlines;
  • Draft and finalize unit meeting minutes;
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of the CLU’s Standard Operating Procedure manual; and
  • Provide administrative support to the Appellate Unit when needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The Administrative Assistant must have a minimum of two (2) years’ experience performing administrative tasks in a professional office environment. An associate degree is preferred, but not required. Law office experience, including knowledge of legal terminology and criminal law and procedure is strongly preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook, Word, and Excel and the ability to operate standard office equipment is required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

The Administrative Assistant interacts daily with a diverse group of individuals, including, but not limited to clients, their families, attorneys, investigators, judges, court clerks, witnesses, and the public, and deals with sensitive information on a regular basis. As a result, excellent communication skills, along with the ability to maintain client confidentiality is required.

The Administrative Assistant must be detail oriented, able to prioritize multiple work assignments and meet deadlines, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision, or collaboratively with other team members. The Administrative Assistant must be able to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, and must be proficient in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and have excellent proofreading and editing skills.

The ability to read, write, and converse in Spanish, as well as translate documents, is preferred.
