Job Description
What You Will Be Doing:
The Member Benefits team works together to help our members through the complicated transitions of retirement as well as assisting them during difficulties after the death of a loved one. As a part of our team, you have the potential to assist the spouse or beneficiary of a recently deceased member to receive monetary and/or health benefits by processing the death benefits available to them as well as process retirement benefits and claims. The incumbent will also produce retirement projections and vesting letters for various retirement plans, these include Public Employee's Retirement System (PERS), Teachers' Retirement System (TRS), Judicial Retirement System (JRS), and the Defined Contribution (DCR) plans.

The Working Environment You Can Expect: This position is centrally located in the heart of downtown Juneau at the State Office Building on the 6th floor. Ideal applicants will be customer service oriented and have the ability to prioritize responsibilities to best suite the needs of the division. Working hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Who We Are Looking For:
  • Reasoning: The ability to read and apply statutes, regulations, standard operating procedures, and other directions.
  • Organization: The ability to search for, select, compile, and summarize data from multiple sources, and the ability to verify accuracy and discrepancies, and make corrections.
  • Communication: Effective communication skills and the ability to work effectively with clients from diverse backgrounds.
  • Computer: Working knowledge of computer-based programs such as Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Interpersonal skills: Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities while maintaining a positive attitude

Minimum Qualifications
Six months of advanced clerical experience in an office environment where the work supported the efforts of technical or professional staff, and required some application of guidelines and policies to meet assigned responsibilities.
"Application of guidelines or policy," means that written direction or accepted theory, from which deviation is not a common option, dictates the nature and process of the work.
The experience is equivalent to Office Assistant 2, Office Assistant 3, Office Assistant 4, Accounting Clerk, Secretary, and Statistical Clerk with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
OR
Six months of post-secondary education (16 semester hours or 24 quarter hours from an accredited college or university equals six months) in any field may substitute for the specific experience.
