What You Will Be DoingThis position serves as the supervisor for the Disability, Pension Adjustment, and Deferred Compensation Units and supervises a total of five Retirement and Benefits Technicians.
Duties include:
- Supervising a team of technicians in day-to-day operations.
- Ensuring efficient and consistent staff performance and production standards are maintained.
- Providing training for new technicians and ongoing training to current team members.
- Counseling members on benefit availability, the timing of elections, benefits provided by the Health and Life Plans, and the claim and appeals processes, as well as other issues related to the plans and member decisions regarding options.
- Performing complex calculations pension adjustments.
- Reviewing and certifying employee premium and eligibility adjustments for accuracy and compliance with plan guidelines;
- Reviewing and certifying disability claims and life insurance premium waiver applications for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with plan guidelines
Our Organization, Mission, and CultureThe Disability and Pension Adjustment Units process benefits for members of the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) and Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS), National Guard and Naval Militia Retirement System (NGNMRS), Unlicensed Vessel Personnel Annuity Retirement Plan (UVPARP), Judicial Retirement System (JRS), Elected Public Official Retirement System (EPORS), and the Defined Contribution Plans. The Disability unit processes occupational and non-occupational disability benefits for our members. The Pension Adjustment Unit processes benefit adjustments such as Cost of Living Allowances (COLA) and any recalculations of members’ retirement benefits. This position provides in-depth knowledge and supervision for all of these units.

Who We Are Looking ForThe successful candidate should possess some or all of the following desired knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Working knowledge of statutes, regulations, health and life insurance contracts, plan documents, and bargaining unit agreements.
- Ability to counsel employees, retirees, employers, union officials and others on retirement or benefits matters.
- Ability to organize, evaluate, and present information clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to use PC/ Business applications systems to input and retrieve information.
- Ability to lead the work of others and to provide training, supervise a team, organize workflow, meet performance measures
One year of experience as a Retirement and Benefits Technician 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
OR
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college.
OR
Two years of experience as a Human Resource Technician 2, PFD Technician 3, Administrative Assistant 2, Insurance Licensing Examiner 3, Accounting Technician 2, or Accountant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
