Job Title: Network and Computer Technician

Department: Academy of Technology and Innovation at UMW

Pay Grade: Unified Salary Grade U190

Work Calendar: 12 month

FLSA Status: Exempt

GENERAL PURPOSE

Reporting to the Executive Director for the Academy of Technology and Innovation, the Network and Computer Technician will serve as a key member of the team responsible for the start-up, launch, and on-going development of the Academy of Technology and Innovation, a regional, college partnership high school program in partnership with UMW and surrounding school divisions. The Network and Computer Technician will be responsible for working with Technology Services and key stakeholders in the development, administration, and maintenance of the technology infrastructure and services at ATI-UMW to include the school’s network and computer devices. The Network and Computer Technician performs key roles in the regional school system administration, provides technical support for technicians and end users, and assists with the documentation and training of technology systems used by ATI-UMW.

MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide System Support

  • Act as a systems administrator for key ATI-UMW technology systems including identity management systems, G Suite Enterprise for Education, Canvas, the regional school’s SIS and various endpoint management systems.
  • Troubleshoots technology issues, follow-up with affected staff, and coordinate with support vendors as required.
  • Performs user account and group administration for on-premises and cloud-based directory services.
  • Prioritizes, schedules, and responds to work requests in a timely manner.
  • Assists in the creation and maintenance of documentation for ATI-UMW technology systems.
  • Assists with staff development and user training on ATI-UMW technology systems.
  • Organizes, schedules, and responds to requests in a timely manner.
  • Assists with the installation, maintenance, and operation of a network, as needed.
  • Facilitates the repair and upgrade of hardware by troubleshooting problems, performing simple repairs, and/or sending equipment out of the building as required.
  • Coordinates the acquisition, inventory, and distribution of software and hardware, ensuring that the appropriate requirements are available, and adhering to licensure guidelines, coordinating with participating school divisions, the University, and the fiscal agent where appropriate.
  • Maintains familiarity with available software.
  • Maintains a license inventory for software purchased by the school, coordinating with participating school divisions

Coordinate Technology Needs

  • Serves as a liaison between the school/department and the Department of Technology.
  • Demonstrates enthusiasm for learning and integrating technology.
  • Assists with the preparation of a budget to purchase technology resources, and facilitates the procurement of selected items.
  • Attends technical training hosted by the fiscal agent’s Department of Technology, ATI-UMW, and other trainings as appropriate and necessary to complete duties.
  • Adheres to fiscal District and ATI-UMW Technology guidelines and standard operating procedures, as applicable.
  • Facilitates the implementation of the Division’s and School’s technology plans.
  • Manages and trains student technology interns, as applicable, to assist with the maintenance, and utilization of hardware, software, and peripherals.
  • Proactively maintains technology hardware, operating systems, and software.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of high school diploma or GED
  • CompTIA A or equivalent experience strongly preferred, with willingness to pursue key industry certification as needed.
  • CompTIA Network , Linux , Microsoft Certified Desktop Administrator, Certified ZENworks Administrator, or other industry certification in network or systems administration strongly preferred or comparable experience.
  • G Suite Certification strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Canvas LMS or other comparable LMS strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Student Information System management preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in network, device, and/or user system administration

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work environment is primarily inside and the noise and temperature levels are moderate.
  • The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must possess the physical ability to work primarily with fingers, perceive the nature of sounds, make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, express or exchange ideas by the spoken word, substantial movements (motions) with the hands, wrists, and/or fingers, and discern letters or numbers at a given distance. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: feeling, grasping, handling, lifting, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity and walking.
