ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

The St. Vincent de Paul Society of San Francisco (SVDP-SF) is dedicated to providing hope and direct person-to-person assistance to break the cycles of homelessness and domestic violence. Established in 1860, SVDP-SF offers residential and comprehensive support services to help individuals stabilize their lives,overcome crises, and achieve self-sufficiency. Our organization serves as a beacon of hope and refuge for men, women, and children impacted by poverty, homelessness, and domestic violence in the San Francisco community.At SVDP-SF, our most valuable asset is our dedicated team of nearly 200 employees working in four locations in San Francisco. Our operating budget is $17 million, sourced from various channels, including government contracts, foundations, corporations, individual donors, events, and earned revenue from investments. While we have established partnerships with entities like the San Francisco Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (HSH), San Francisco Department on the Status of Women (DOSW),and the California Office of Emergency Services (CALOES), there is untapped potential for expansion, particularly in fundraising efforts targeting individuals, foundations, corporations, and legacy gifting.

SERVICES

SVDP-SF serves hundreds of individuals experiencing poverty, homelessness, or domestic violence daily. Our programs and services encompass two main areas: Homeless Services and Domestic Violence Services. Homeless Services include emergency shelters, transitional housing, access to mental health resources, and essential supplies. Domestic Violence Services are provided through the Riley Center, offering comprehensive support for survivors from crisis intervention to achieving self-sufficiency.

LEADERSHIP

As a 501(c)(3) organization, SVDP-SF is governed by a dedicated 14-member Board of Directors, and managed by its Executive Director. The executive leadership team, supervised by the Executive Director, includes experienced leaders responsible for finance, program operations, homeless services, human resources, and development. SVDP-SF seeks a visionary leader who embodies our mission, values, and Catholic principles to leverage human capital and expand vital services for the unhoused and victims of domestic violence within our ever-evolving community. This individual will passionately advocate for our cause, fostering a collaborative problem-solving approach, while actively seeking professional development opportunities.They must possess strong judgment and excel in diverse and multicultural environments.

SUMMARY

The Executive Director will provide overall leadership to SVDP-SF, overseeing departments, programs, facilities, employees, and organizational policies and procedures. This is a Full-time, Exempt, non-union position.The work schedule is Monday through Friday with occasional evenings and weekends as required.

SALARY AND BENEFITS OVERVIEW

This position offers a competitive compensation package, including comprehensive benefits. The salary range for this position is $150K-194K annually DOE. Kaiser HMO paid in full for employee. Voluntary dental, life, and vision insurance. 403b retirement plan with employer paid match after 1 year of employment. Three weeks vacation accrued in first year and ten sick days accrued per year. Two personal floating holidays and twelve and a half holidays offered per year. Employee Assistance Program. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Leadership and Management

  • Guide SVDP-SF toward achieving its mission, values, and goals. Including oversight of the strategic planning process and demonstrating expertise in homelessness and domestic violence issues.
  • Lead and manage collaborations with community groups, funders, and stakeholders.

Fundraising

  • Increase institutional support through relationships with key funders, explore new revenue channels, and expand donor base.
  • Enhance event-generated revenue through strategic planning, social media, and print advertising.
  • Reestablish and nurture the SVDP-SF legacy society through special events and professional engagement.

Partner with the Board of Directors

  • Recommend and implement strategic program enhancements.
  • Develop and present comprehensive annual financial plans.
  • Identify and engage new qualified Board candidates.
  • Foster a collaborative and transparent relationship with the Board, built on trust and open communication.

External Communications and Relationships

  • Serve as the primary spokesperson and ambassador for SVDP-SF.
  •  Oversee all public relations activities, ensuring consistent branding and messaging.
  •  Cultivate partnerships with nonprofit organizations, elected officials, and subject matter experts.

Organizational Effectiveness and Development

  • Lead and manage day-to-day operations:
  • Ensure smooth operation of all programs and departments.
  • Facilitate ongoing professional development opportunities for staff.
  • Foster a culture of mentorship and support.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews to promote ongoing professional growth.
  • Communicate organizational values and mission to staff.

Program Development, Management, and Evaluation

  • Oversee the development, management, and evaluation of SVDP-SF's programs, ensuring they:
  • Align with the organization's mission and values.
  • Have clear and measurable objectives.
  • Promote critical thinking and innovation in program development.
  • Lead thorough documentation and evaluation of program work.
  • Disseminate key findings internally and externally to inform future initiatives.

Operations and Finance

  • Provide leadership and oversight of SVDP's financial management ensuring efficient operations.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Finance on various tasks including preparing budgets and forecasts, analyzing revenue models, diversifying income streams, approving audits, managing grants, and ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for both operational and financial aspects.

Human Resources

  • Provide strategic leadership for SVDP-SF's human resource functions, including:
  • Ensure adherence to HR policies and practices.
  • Oversee salary and benefits administration.
  • Collaborate with the Director of HR to:
    • Maintain a productive partnership with the Union Representative.
    • Ensure compliance with union agreements.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a chief executive role, or experience as a senior executive in a complex nonprofit organization with expertise and ability to assume the chief leadership role.
  • Demonstrated success managing an organization with an operational budget of at least $8M and 100 employees.
  • Finance experience in budgeting, forecasting, audit/contract management, and compliance.
  • Experience with government contracts including City, State and Federal (responding to RFPs, bids, negotiating contracts, modifications, compliance).
  • Successful track record of staff (and volunteer) management and mentoring, team building, and the development of an organizational culture that encourages growth and open communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in partnership with the Board of Directors, and balance Board involvement with staff functions.
  • Proven track record of success in all areas of development including individual donors, major gifts, foundations, corporate funding, city/state/federal government, and special events.
  • Ability to bring subject matter expertise in one or more of the following areas:
    • Emergency and/or Transitional Services for the unhoused
    • Domestic Violence Support Services
    • Transitional Age Youth
    • Poverty and Social Justice
  • Experience leading, or being an integral part of, a strategic planning process.
  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree is required. A graduate degree in an applicable field is preferred.

  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and ability to think outside the box.
