St Mark's Episcopal School is Hiring a Fourth Grade Lead Teacher Near Houston, TX

St. Mark's seeks a 4th Grade Lead Teacher with a passion for teaching students who work at grade level and above. The ideal candidate will work effectively as a member of a grade-level team to plan all aspects of the 4th Grade program. As a member of the Lower School faculty, the 4th Grade Lead teacher will report to the Head of the Lower School and is responsible for maintaining an engaging 4th Grade classroom environment, assessing and reporting the progress of the students, leading parent conferences and managing parent communication regarding all aspects of the 4th Grade year.

 

Duties 

  • Plan, prepare and implement lessons and activities to meet the physical, emotional, intellectual and social needs of children who are nine turning ten years old
  • Provide math instruction based upon the anchor program and Everyday Mathematics, supplemented by lessons and activities that enhance, remediate or extend the learning of the students
  • Teach a balanced literacy program following agreed upon methodology, such as Readers and Writers workshop along with Words Their Way and other elements for building a strong literacy foundation.
  • Integrate technology projects into the curriculum
  • Identify and select different instructional resources and methods to meet students' varying needs 
  • Observe and evaluate students’ performance and development
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress and development
  • Prepare and discuss each student’s academic progress, development of work habits and social/emotional skills with parents at the fall and winter parent conferences
  • Communicate student concerns with parents through the appropriate channels
  • Maintain appropriate classroom supervision for 4th grade children, guiding and redirecting their behavior as needed 
  • Create an effective learning environment through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and activity/learning centers
 

Other Duties

  • Supervise play areas, the restrooms, lunch and dismissal on a regular basis
  • Participate in school meetings and parent conferences
  • Maintain professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings, and other professional activities
  • Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Head of Lower School

Required Skills and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education 
  • A deep understanding of educating the whole child
  • A passion for teaching and learning with a collaborative spirit 
  • A minimum of three years of teaching experience
  • Genuine affinity for working with children and families in a highly engaged community
  • Knowledge and experience of working in an independent school
 

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Works in a sometimes highly stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time
  • Physical agility to lift up to 40 pounds; to bend, stoop, and reach overhead
  • Work primarily in a traditional climate controlled classroom environment
  • Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold
