Finance Secretary Opening at St. John’s United Methodist Church

St. John’s United Methodist Church (http://www.stjohnsmidtown.org/) is seeking candidates for a Finance Secretary to work up to 30 hours a week.

St. John’s is an urban church near downtown Memphis, Tennessee. We have strong traditions of serving our community and welcoming everyone. Our doors are open to people of all ages, races, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, economic levels, disabilities as well as sojourners on the way to recovery or wholeness.

The Finance Secretary manages all financial affairs of the church. Responsibilities of the position are as follows:

  • Deposit contributions and post to Church Windows.
  • Prepare and distribute donor statements.
  • Invoice, collect, record, and deposit non-contribution items (e.g., rents, building use).
  • Download, track, and post online giving.
  • Process Accounts Payables and Receivables.
  • Verify, pay, and post employee credit card charges.
  • Prepare and process bi-weekly payroll for hourly and salaried employees.
  • Make a bi-weekly 941 deposit and file 941 Quarterly payroll return.
  • Prepare Annual W-2s and 1099s and file reports with IRS.
  • Update employee records.
  • Oversee employee benefits.
  • Oversee the employee retirement benefit plan and submit payments for employees and employer contributions.
  • On/Off board employees.
  • Coordinate/prepare annual church budget in collaboration with Finance Committee.
  • Collect budget information and assemble the proposed new year budget for finance committee review and final approval.
  • Support Finance Committee’s work for the annual “Every Member Commitment” (EMC) campaign.
  • Prepare previous year's EMC campaign report.
  • Enter all pledges in Church Windows.
  • Keep the Finance Committee and Senior Pastor updated on progress of campaign.
  • Prepare and distribute monthly financial reports for the Finance Committee that include:
  • Review, analyze, reconciliation of balance sheet.
  • Review of general ledger.
  • Review of over-budget accounts
  • Make journal entrees, including payroll, amortization, and others.
  • Reconcile all bank accounts.
  • Reconcile and record investment accounts.
  • Attend the Finance Committee meetings.
  • Coordinate Annual Audit review with CPA firm.
  • Prepare reports for District and Charge Conferences and annual reports.
  • Update detailed asset file for depreciation and tracking of property.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required

College coursework or degree preferred

3 years of general accounting experience to include, but not limited to, accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, balance sheet, month- and quarter-end reporting, budgeting

Knowledge of timekeeping and payroll processing

Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook

Experience with Church Windows preferred

Successful background check

Provide proof of current and active driver’s license

Effective verbal and written communication skills

Ability to maintain confidentiality

Ability to determine priorities and manage multiple tasks

Proven attention to detail and follow-up

Regular in-person attendance during office hours and occasional evening meetings for Finance Committee

Pay: $20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 30 per week
