Position Description: President

About St. Coletta of Wisconsin

St. Coletta of Wisconsin is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing high-quality residential, day/vocational programs and services for persons with developmental disabilities (DD) and other challenges. We strive to provide client-driven programs and services that consistently meet and exceed the expectations of our stakeholders. We are dedicated to upholding the rights of persons with disabilities so they may be included in all aspects of life, participate as full citizens, and receive the support they require for a quality life. St. Coletta of Wisconsin is a long-standing organization with a rich history in the United States, founded by the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi-Milwaukee in 1904. St. Coletta of Wisconsin is comprised of five 501(c)(3) organizations: our main entity, three Housing and Urban Development (HUD) corporations, and the Charitable Foundation.

Location/Travel

The President is expected to work on site at St. Coletta of Wisconsin in Jefferson, WI (midway between Milwaukee and Madison). The individual may commute from a reasonable distance. Periodic travel as required to operational areas of Greater Milwaukee and Greater Chicago (northwest suburbs).

Description

  • Executive leadership role overseeing all aspects of the organization to achieve both success and growth.
  • Responsible for leading the organization and all functions to accomplish the mission of St. Coletta of Wisconsin, under the direction of the Board Chair and Board of Directors.
  • Provide strategic vision, strategies, and leadership, while directing others to accomplish the goals necessary to sustain, improve, and grow the organization.
  • Oversee all day-to-day operations including all programs, finances, client and staff safety and health issues, physical plant, mission awareness, advocacy, development, and community involvement.
  • Manages the organization's strategic initiatives to attract, develop, and retain a diverse talent pool.
  • Perform all duties assigned.

Supervision

  • Supervised by the Board of Directors of St. Coletta of Wisconsin
  • Accountable to the Charitable Foundation Board
  • Supervises Executive Vice President, Vice President of Residential Services, Vice President of Support Services, Controller, and Human Resources Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Mission: Monitor and enhance the mission of the organization. Develop a mission effectiveness program for clients and staff and promote the mission within the community at large.
  • Leadership/Personnel: Lead and manage the senior leadership team, including performance assessment management, development, and succession planning. Delegate to and hold accountable all directors and program supervisors for their individual program areas. Oversee the effective management of the organization’s talent, including hiring/firing, training and development, performance assessment and reporting, compliance, etc.
  • Organizational Structure/Management – Develop an effective organizational structure that meets client needs and qualifies the organization for State and Federal funding. Effectively manage all operations (e.g., residential care, vocational day programs, transportation) to provide the highest quality possible. This includes monthly performance measurement and reporting; identifying and improving effectiveness and quality of functions whenever possible; and mitigating organization risks.
  • Regulatory/Compliance: Know all regulations and rules in the State and Federal systems for programs used to generate revenue and ensure that St. Coletta remains in compliance with these provisions. Adhere to all accreditations and compliance requirements. Knowledge or competency in CARF accreditation strongly preferred. Knowledge of residential and vocational operations and requirements/licensing in Wisconsin and Illinois strongly preferred.
  • Stewardship/Financial Reporting: Monitor the financial assets of the organization in collaboration with the Controller and develop new sources of funding to enhance the organization’s growth, stability, and diversification. Oversee all financial reporting and management of finances, including budgeting, cost containment, revenue improvement, financial statement analysis, capital expenditure (preparation/review/approval), monthly financial reporting, variance management, annual audit process, etc. Ensure timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial reports, and trends to assist senior management and the Board in performing their responsibilities.
  • Development/Philanthropy – Oversee the organization’s development function and develop/cultivate relationships with key donors to effectively generate no less than $5 million annually to support the annual required expenditures and provide additional funding and growth to the Foundation.
  • Communication: Ensure excellent communication with key stakeholders, including the families of clients. On behalf of the Board of Directors, inform the Sisters of St. Francis, who are the Board of Members, about developments within the organization. Provide expertise to the Board of Directors through active presentation of staff and management recommendations. Develop Board in-service programs that increase the knowledge base of Board Directors such that the decision-making process is improved. Serve as the organization’s official spokesperson when interfacing with the community at large, and as representative of St. Coletta, as authorized in the bylaws. Communicate effectively and compassionately with clients, their families, and staff.
  • Lobbying/Advocacy/Relationship Development: Initiate and manage necessary government lobbying to maximize public financial support to the organization. Seek to influence decisions at the State and Federal level that will enhance the position and success of the organization and improve its ability to provide services. Actively strive to develop contacts at the State and Federal levels with individuals in the legislature, administration, and community. Register as lobbyist and be accountable for related due diligence and reporting. Knowledge of Family Care in Wisconsin strongly preferred.
  • Planning/Vision: Develop and present long- and short-range goals and objectives to the Board of Directors in the development of long-range plans and midcourse correction efforts. Lead the collaborative development/refreshing of a comprehensive strategic plan for the organization and ensure that all planned goals and initiatives are achieved. Forecast trends in the field that impact the organization and present these issues to the Board.
  • Safety: Ensure a safe work environment for clients and staff at all times.

Qualifications

  • Franciscan Values – Faith-based commitment to the mission of St. Coletta of Wisconsin and to the Franciscan values of compassion, dignity, and respect for all individuals. Proven commitment to and passion for serving people with developmental and other disabilities and to developing staff to serve clients.
  • Management and Leadership – Proven management skills in an executive leadership role overseeing all aspects of an organization. Vision and skills to build and guide St. Coletta of Wisconsin. Demonstrated high level of flexibility related to implementing necessary corrective actions.
  • Experience – Minimum of 10-15 years of key executive leadership experience in an organization, preferably a nonprofit.
    • Knowledge and experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities and special needs, including active treatment concepts and interdisciplinary programming.
    • Extensive, proven, and documented supervisory experience at a variety of levels.
    • A minimum of five years’ experience overseeing major programs, three years of which must include financial responsibility.
    • Preferred: Demonstrated successful experience with State and Federal surveys given to organizations that serve people with developmental disabilities. Knowledge and understanding of relevant State and Federal survey processes, including licensing, quality, medical, etc. Thorough understanding of Wisconsin and Federal rules and regulations regarding serving people with developmental disabilities.
  • Education – Minimum Bachelor’s Degree or commensurate experience. Advanced college degree preferred in related field, with emphasis on the administration of developmental disabilities or vocational programs.
  • Communication – Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively interact with leadership, staff, clients, client families, guardians, donors, regulatory agencies, etc. Ability to effectively prepare and present information to employees, management, Board of Directors, media, and public groups.
  • Reasoning Ability – Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, analyze and interpret information, reach correct conclusions, and make good decisions. Capable of evaluating multiple variables and abstract information.
  • Finances – Good understanding of budgeting principles and ability to work with the Controller to understand key financial concepts and reports relevant to the organization and the Foundation. Investment knowledge preferred.
  • Communication – Proven ability to communicate with key stakeholders and deliver compelling presentations.
