Job description:

Position Summary:

The Manager of Microbiology plans, organizes, coordinates, and directs activities of staff through knowledge and understanding in each laboratory section. S/he serves as primary specialist and provides expert technical assistance and training to laboratory staff. The Manager of Microbiology monitors and implements policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services. S/he is responsible for the development and evaluation of new methodologies and instrumentation for the designated laboratory section. The Manager of Microbiology maintains quality of service by reviewing test results and quality control results. S/he monitors maintenance of equipment, reports malfunctions to Director of Laboratory (Administration) and calls for repair.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or related field or the combination of education, knowledge, skills, mental development, and relevant experience that enables performance of all aspects of the position. (Required)
  • Medical Technologist (ASCP) or M (ASCP) or equivalent. (Required)
  • Master’s degree in Biology or related field and/or SM (ASCP) certification (specialty in microbiology). (Preferred)

Experience:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience as a Medical Technologist and one (1) year of supervisory experience. (Required)
  • A minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience in a laboratory department in a health care setting. (Preferred)

Responsibilities:

  • Obtain Director of Laboratory (Administration)’s approval before decisions are made.
  • Maintain, encourage, and communicate in compliance with the organizational structure by following the chain of command.
  • Prepare work schedule for laboratory section to provide adequate coverage.
  • Review and revise all current procedure manuals at least annually with final approval of the Director of Laboratory (Administration) and Pathologist.
  • Maintain appropriate level of supplies and reagents.
  • Monitor validity and accuracy of test results obtained in each clinical laboratory section.
  • Review critical test results for documentation by staff of proper notification to physician or nursing staff.
  • Direct training and instruction for new personnel in laboratory section.
  • Provide technical supervision to others in trouble shooting procedures, reagents, and equipment problems.
  • Submit proficiency survey results promptly. Document corrective action for unacceptable results for proficiency survey.
  • Perform quality assurance studies.
  • Perform duties as medical technologist in laboratory section as needed.
  • Evaluate new products and instrumentation and make recommendations for purchases.
  • Check operative efficiency of equipment and instruments, taking corrective action as needed.
  • Review preventive maintenance records making sure manufacturer’s recommendations are being followed.
  • Complete annual competency assessments and performance reviews of staff in laboratory section in a timely manner to assure quality of work.
  • Consistently supervise staff in a fair and firm manner. Provide direction as necessary, lead by professional example.
  • Monitor sick calls, breaks, meal breaks, phone calls, etc. and take appropriate disciplinary action.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining continual compliance with policies, procedures, and record keeping necessary to meet the standards of accrediting agencies.
  • Assist in supervision of training and ongoing continuing education of laboratory staff.
  • Oversee workers to ensure all safety and infection control policies and procedures are followed.
  • Attend regularly appropriate committees and management meetings.
  • Attend various training and workshops appropriate for the acquisition of the necessary skills and information to either enhance or develop laboratory procedures and disseminate the information and skills acquired to staff.
  • Perform administrative and technical tasks in section departments as needed.
  • Collaborate regularly with Director of Laboratory (Administration) to plan laboratory activities, to keep informed of laboratory activities, and to monitor staffing needs.
  • Collaborate with Director of Laboratory (Administration) regarding all laboratory activities following regulatory guidelines.
  • Monitor laboratory policies and procedures and facilities their implementation.
  • Enforce all rules and regulations implemented by Hospital administration.
  • Make recommendations to the Director of Laboratory (Administration) for staffing patterns to meet the continuity of care in the laboratory department.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining total quality management, including the standards of accuracy, precision, and efficiency in the performance of tests and the operation of equipment.
  • Monitor and document incident reports and complaints.
  • Enforce safety regulations for the department to ensure patients and Hospital staff of maximum protection from hazardous effects of materials used in the department.
  • Ensure safety and cost effectiveness policies, procedures and standards are followed.
  • Evaluate the competency and skill level of staff and students.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $28.00 per hour
