Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to oversee the technical and supervisory management of the Whole Genome Sequencing section of Microbiology and Newborn Screening sections as well as Bioterrorism. Testing methods include, but are not limited to, general and specialized techniques in Microbiology, Molecular Biology and genomic sequencing. Serves as a working supervisor.

Job Responsibilities

  • Oversees Next generation genomic sequencing testing of Bacterial, Viral, and newbornscreening disorder Deoxyribonucleic Acid/Ribonucleic Acid (DNA/RNA). Verifies that test procedures performed are accurate and precise per Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) rules for each system. Resolves technical problems. Verifies that remedial actions are taken. Report results and upload in genomic databases.
  • Serves as a working supervisor. Assigns and reviews work Provides guidance and training to assigned staff Counsels staff regarding work performance Reassigns staff to meet day-to-day operating needs Establishes annual goals and objectives Approves time off Prepares and signed performance evaluation.
  • Ensures that Quality Control and Quality Assurance programs are maintained to assure the quality of laboratory services provided. Identifies and resolves problems/failures as they occur. Makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Verifies appropriate laboratory safety mechanisms, procedures, policies, and practices are in place and followed. Monitors Bioterrorism and Whole genome sequencing methods regularly.
  • On an established schedule, evaluates and assesses the capabilities of testing personnel per the guidelines established in the guidelines of Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments(CLIA) updates and maintains records.
  • Prepares laboratory budget. Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies. Prepares preventive maintenance schedule for equipment, including those maintained on service contracts.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires possession of a Bachelor’s degree in one of the chemical, biological, physical, or medical sciences.
  • Requires four years of professional laboratory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three years of experience in DNA/RNA amplification and genetic sequencing.
  • Extensive knowledge of regulatory guidelines governing clinical diagnostic testing.
  • Extensive knowledge in the care, operation, and maintenance of analytical instrumentation.
  • Three years of experience supervising and directing the work of professional clinical, environmental and forensic laboratory staff performing laboratory operations.
  • Three years of professional laboratory experience using a Laboratory information management system(LIMS).
