The Instructor will prepare participants to obtain the ACT Workkeys proficiency certificates required by DESE to work as a paraprofessional/paraeducator (Teacher Assistant) in the state of Massachusetts. The WorkKeys Proficiency Certificate for Paraprofessional consists of Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics, and Business Writing assessments.

This program will orient students to the job of Para Educator in the local public schools. Paraprofessional Educators work with teachers and other school staff to provide instructional assistance, classroom support, and implement effective classroom strategies to meet the needs of all students. The instructor will provide face-to-face instruction with limited online instruction. Instructors will follow the course syllabus (pacing guide) and unit plans using the Workkeys training system, Google Classroom and other Learning Management Systems as required. The instructor will prepare students to meet or exceed the rigorous standards by ACT. Instruction will be delivered to Adult Learners and require utilizing best practices for instruction.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Instructors will provide high quality instruction related to developing student knowledge and skills in order to meet the Massachusetts hiring requirements.
    • Paraprofessionals must achieve at the following skill levels on all three sections of the ACT Workkeys Certificate of Proficiency for Paraprofessional Teaching Assistants:
      • Reading for Information: Skill Level 5
      • Applied Mathematics: Skill Level 4
      • Business Writing: Skill Level 3
  • Prepares the Workkeys LMS with classroom groups, assigns students and content areas, monitors student progress, and facilitates instruction activities to meet course objectives and student test preparedness.
  • Provides instruction content using Google Classroom and other LMS tools as required.
  • Works closely with evening and/or day staff to create a collaborative learning environment while utilizing a variety of instructional methods, techniques and on campus/online resources.
  • Using unit plans and lesson plans preparing Google Classroom, instructional videos, models, labs, websites, and projects for face-to-face instruction demonstrating a proficiency of best practices for adult learners.
  • Collaborates with program staff to develop and maintain student assessment schedules in order to meet program goals and fulfill funding requirements.
  • Assesses students in all subject areas using summative and formative assessments, Workkeys and Workplace Readiness based on instructional needs.
  • Participates in program planning, curriculum development, and program continuous improvement activities and requirements.
  • Attends meetings, participates in programs, projects and other duties as needed.
Job Requirements:
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse, inclusive and student-centered environment, and with current and prospective students and staff of various learning styles, cultures, identities, and life-experiences.
  • Bachelors' degree (in Education or Technology preferred).
  • At least 3 years of experience with providing instruction and/or training in a professional environment.
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication, using multimedia and other technology.
  • Ability to work with second language learners and translate technical and Workkeys terms/processes into lay terms.
  • Ability to teach the following subjects (reading, applied math, business writing content) across the K12 curriculum level.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to use classroom technology skills with proficiency in Windows, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Classroom and the Google Suite to support student instruction using multimedia, videos, and communication tools.
  • Commitment to learner-centered, life-long learning; professional development.
  • Belief that students can learn and willingness to meet the needs of the students.
  • Ability to teach with proficiency in person and/or online.
  • Positive attitude, patience, flexible and demonstrates the ability to explain concepts to all learners.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working with a diverse population.
  • Master's degree.
  • Trained in the use of the Workkeys System and other assessment tools.
  • Past experience as a paraprofessional and completion of the Workkeys Exams.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Strong leadership skills.

Additional Information:

Salary: $50.00 per hour
Benefits: No. Non Union position
Work Schedule: Current class schedule is 10 week sessions (Monday through Thursday, evenings typically between 5:30 and 9:00 PM) in line with the Workforce Development academic calendar, available funding, and need of the department. Individual schedule to be determined with the supervisor including evening meetings from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at least once a month on campus.
