SPAN is Hiring a VP of Public Policy Near Washington, DC

VP of Public Policy

Our Mission

SPAN develops products that accelerate the rapid adoption of renewable energy in the home. The flagship SPAN Smart Panel is the first true evolution for the traditional home electric panel, harnessing enhanced technology for metering, monitoring, and control. An expanded product suite of intelligent, integrated solutions radically lowers the cost and complexity of energy upgrades–including solar, batteries and EVs–empowering homeowners to be active, resilient and informed players in the energy market.

The Role

SPAN is seeking a VP of Policy and Regulatory Affairs to lead a cross-functional organization responsible for advancing SPAN's public policy and regulatory goals, including working with federal agencies such as the US Department of Energy (DOE) and Congress. The VP of Policy and Regulatory Affairs will lead SPAN's congressional and regulatory government relations and public policy practice at the federal level, while also representing the company before trade associations, conventions, and think tanks in Washington DC and relevant State-level bodies. This position will also hire and manage additional resources focused on the policy and regulatory work at the state and local levels in areas where SPAN is operating. This position will sit in Washington, D.C., and report to our COO in our headquarters in San Francisco, CA.

About You

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Engage directly with federal policymakers, regulators, industry stakeholders, and key opinion leaders to shape policy and regulatory outcomes.

  • Track current and emerging policy and legislation at the federal level while developing and executing SPAN’s political strategy.

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with federal agencies; including the U.S. Department of Energy, the White House, Congress, and other key external stakeholders and policymakers.

  • Work closely with other teams at SPAN, including Legal, Safety and Certification teams, to ensure up to date knowledge of company plans and reporting policy/political developments with analysis.

  • Manage external consultant relationships and represent SPAN before trade associations and think-tanks.

  • Engage key stakeholders and rights holders within the energy sector, including public policy organizations and government departments and agencies.

  • Monitor and advance federal and state legislative and regulatory initiatives, and execute strategies to influence regulatory reform.

  • Actively support teams with the execution of solutions that address stakeholder concerns.

  • Work with industry and trade groups to develop and advocate for common industry positions.

Required Qualifications

  • 10 years of government relations or public policy experience within government, the energy or cleantech domains, and/or relevant nonprofits, public interest groups, companies, or industry associations.

  • Skilled and experienced at persuasively and diplomatically advocating complex policy positions before a wide variety of audiences.

  • Experience in translating complex policy and legislation succinctly and persuasively to support SPAN policy and regulatory affairs objectives.

  • Knowledge of Federal legislative dynamics and decision-making, and an expansive political network.

  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

  • Experience with the Department of Energy, Inflation Reduction Act Administrators, and/or with congressional committees with oversight of residential electrification standards and/or internet-connected electrical systems in the home (including solar, batteries, EVs, heat pumps, and electrical panels).

  • Ability to travel domestically to project sites (up to 30%).

Bonus Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree (J.D., MBA, MPP, MPA, etc.)

  • 5 years working on energy or cleantech technology policy.

  • Experience working with national associations that represent state and local government in California, New York State, and Texas.

  • Experience with policy and regulatory affairs related to residential energy technologies.
