Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse, located in East Fairmount Park, has been a treasured destination for 125 years. With the mission to provide and promote opportunities for unstructured free play for children, Smith offers free admission to over 160,000 visitors annually along with programming to support the physical, social, emotional and cognitive development of children. The Volunteer/Site Coordinator at Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse helps to maintain the grounds of the 6.5 acre site. The person in this position is responsible for day-to-day as well as cyclical site needs. They ensure that the site is a clean, well-maintained, attractive and safe public facility. They are also responsible for overseeing a volunteer program of over 900 volunteers annually.

Essential functions

Groundskeeping & Minor Building Repairs/Maintenance

• Design, manage and implement daily and weekly plans for outdoor groundskeeping (landscaping, gardening, weeding, trimming trees and shrubs, mowing lawns, managing litter and garbage, etc.)
• Monitor the site and address problems as they arise; make site repairs as needed.
• Work with Operations Manager and Visitors Services Manager to direct and obtain support from maintenance and visitor service staff.
• Manage inventory of tools and materials to ensure that proper supplies are onsite.
• Identify plant materials needed seasonally; install and maintain plantings.
• Support the work of the Building Committee of the Board of Trustees as needed.

Site Volunteer Coordination

• Help recruit, plan, lead, and participate in group volunteer engagements related to site work at Smith
• Work with Operations Manager and other staff to identify needs/projects
• Cultivate relationships and act as the primary point of contact for site volunteer communications
• Manage the volunteer databases

• Ability to multitask; shows initiative and works well independently without supervision.
• Possesses good people skills and a comfort level with both children and adults.
• Pays close attention to details and acts proactively to anticipated issues and problems.
• Uses good communication, problem solving, and organizational skills.
• Knowledgeable about landscaping and willing to continue to enhance skills in this area.
• Experienced with basic tools and equipment. General carpentry and routine maintenance skills preferred.
• Has the ability and comfort level to work outdoors including during periods of inclement weather.
• Ability to lift 75 lbs. or more with assistance; can climb ladders and stairs.
• Must possess a positive attitude, solid work ethic and value teamwork.
• Clearance required (Child Abuse, FBI Fingerprinting, Criminal Background, and NSOR
• Able to work flexible hours, including weekends.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $16.00 - $22.33 per hour

Expected hours: 15 – 20 per week
