POSITION SUMMARY

The Shingle Springs Tribal Police Department is committed to providing the highest levels of customer service to its members and visitors, while constantly improving the quality of life that the tribal community desires and deserves. The Police Department enjoys a positive relationship with its tribal community and takes every opportunity to interact and engage residents and visitors on a regular basis. The Department enforces both tribal ordinances and applicable federal laws on the reservation and works closely with other law enforcement agencies to maintain a safe environment on the Shingle Springs Rancheria.

The ideal candidate must be an experienced and proven leader with an understanding of modern police management systems and practices. Possessing good communication, progressive problem solving, and dependable follow through skills are essential to the position. Likewise, the ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with employees, other tribal administrative leaders and staff, and members, residents and other departments within the community is a must. The administrative nature of the work requires considerable responsibility for making decisions regarding actions to be taken, independent judgment in the interpretation of policies and procedures, as well as application of laws and ordinances. A Police Sergeant provides complex staff assistance to the Police Lieutenant. Supervision is received from the Lieutenant who confers with the Sergeant as well as the Assistant Chief of Police on unusual problems and reviews work through observation of results and evaluation of reports.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Assist in coordinating the organization, staffing and operational activities for assigned law enforcement services and staff.
  2. Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and priorities for programs and staff; recommend and implement policies and procedures.
  3. Identify opportunities for improving service delivery methods and procedures; identify resource needs; assist in implementing improvements.
  4. Assist in directing, coordinating and reviewing the work plan for assigned law enforcement staff; assign work activities and projects; monitor workflow; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems.
  5. Conduct internal inspections of police vehicles, radios and related equipment.
  6. Provide public service presentations for the Rancheria Community.
  7. Recommend, train, motivate and evaluate law enforcement personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies.
  8. Provide staff assistance to the Police Commander and Police Chief; prepare and present staff reports and other correspondence as appropriate and necessary.
  9. Attend and participate in professional group meetings and committees; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of law enforcement.
  10. Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Two or more (2 ) years of experience as a sworn Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians Tribal Police Officer.
  2. Must acknowledge and agree to maintain a Drug-Free workplace as a condition of employment. Must pass pre-employment drug test screening. A DMV print-out and background check will be required (outside candidates only).
  3. The ability to be unbiased and fair during the performance of duties and assignments; effectively and courteously work with community members, visitors and co-workers; always observing situations analytically and objectively.
  4. Possess knowledge of law enforcement and public safety patrolling techniques which will contribute to the safeguard of the Tribal community.
  5. The ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  6. The ability to resolve complaints, make inquiries, correspond with staff, regulatory agencies, employees and members of the community.
  7. Good written and verbal communications skills, including composing/editing. Good listening skills.
  8. Meet the essential functions of the job classification to safely and effectively perform assigned duties.
  9. Supports a safe work environment by performing all duties in accordance with Tribal safety policies and procedures.
  10. Due to the nature of interactions with other employees and the public, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.
  11. Law Enforcement Experience and/or training is required. (BIA, FLETC, POST, etc.)
  12. Must be at least 21 years of age.
  13. High school diploma or GED.
  14. Ability to pass a medical and psychological assessment.
  15. Must possess a valid CPR/First Aid card.
  16. Must possess a Valid California Driver License and be insurable through the Tribe.
  17. Must be professional, polite, and respectful towards all community members and guests.
  18. Must be able to work extended hours when necessary.
  19. Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated patience, tact and respect.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Administration of Justice Degree and/or completed Administration of Justice college certification.
  2. Two or more (2 ) years of supervisory experience.
  3. Experience in Tribal Government is preferred.

DRUG SCREEN

Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians requires the successful completion of a drug screening of all potential Tribal employees prior to being hired. The Tribe recognizes that the State of California has legalized the use of marijuana. The Tribe is located on federally owned trust land and complies with federal laws. Therefore, marijuana use is prohibited, and all drug tests will include a screening for THC.

Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians recognizes a zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policy, and employees will be required to sign a Consent to Drug and/or Alcohol Testing. Employees may be selected for alcohol / drug testing upon reasonable suspicion, and upon any/all accidents.

BACKGROUND CHECK

Candidates for this position will be subject to criminal and character background checks and fingerprinting prior to being hired. Verification of previous employment and education will also be conducted after the interview if an offer of employment is being considered.

NATIVE PREFERENCE

Preference in hiring is given to either the most qualified applicant or a Native American candidate who meets the minimum qualifications. When two (2) or more Native American candidates have comparable qualifications, the following order of preference shall apply: (1) Members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (2) Spouses or domestic partners (certified through Tribal Court) of members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (3) Parents of children of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (4) All other documented Native Americans; (5) All other applicants in accordance with Title 25, U.S. Code, Section 472 and 473. Applicants claiming Native preference must submit verification of Indian eligibility.
