Baltimore City Public Schools is Hiring an Educational Specialist II - Robotics Near Baltimore, MD

Related positions are contingent on board approval.

Provides system-wide leadership in robotics and the district's enrichment offerings in science and engineering. Provides support to school leaders and teachers in order to maintain current opportunities and increase future opportunities for students to experience robotics and other authentic STEM enrichment activities. Establishes and sustains partnerships with organizations to increase STEM opportunities for students and ensure that STEM programming is equitably distributed. Organizes City Schools' involvement in citywide competitions, such as annual robotics championships, the citywide science fair, and the championship for Maryland Science Olympiad.

Essential Functions
  • Increases student access to high quality robotics programs, and other authentic STEM enrichment opportunities.
  • Manages current and future programs that are operated by the district such as FLL Jr., FLL, VEX IQ, and VEX robotics programs.
    • Recruits new teams and maintains communication with existing teams
    • Ensures teams complete registration requirements
    • Distributes equipment to teams and collect equipment from teams that fail to meet program requirements
    • Manages program operations, including budget development and grant writing
  • Manages working relationships with all established and future partners willing to support robotics and other authentic STEM enrichment programs.
  • Manages and develops City Schools' summer STEM programs involving robotics and supported STEM enrichment programs, such as Engineers of the Future.
  • Manages all district-owned competition equipment and robotics materials.
    • Maintains an active inventory
    • Arranges transportation of equipment to and from events
    • Purchases and/or repairs equipment
    • Be physically present to check all equipment out before events; to unload and unpack the equipment at the events; to pack and load all equipment at events; to check in all equipment after events; to check equipment out and in to teachers.
  • Establishes and maintains a successful communication process with all robotics coaches/STEM enrichment program leads.
  • Plans, manages, and/or supports major STEM competitions, including but not limited to the Baltimore City FLL Scrimmages, FLL Regional Qualifier, FLL Jr. Expo, Baltimore City Mentor Leagues, and Hopkins Robotics Cup.
  • Maintains a personal presence with teams by visiting one or more teams per week.
  • Develops and manages a system to collect data and evaluate supported programs.
  • Plans, manages, and/or supports professional development to grow and develop new and existing robotics coaches/STEM enrichment program leads.
  • Provides targeted technical assistance for coaches, teams, and principals to support program success.
  • Supports Baltimore City teams at state and national championships.
  • Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board policies and the professional standards.

Desired Qualifications
  • Masters degree in Education or related field, such as engineering. Degree must be from an accredited college or institution.
  • Three years teaching experience in K-12 education, preferably in the science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
  • Valid Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Advanced Professional Certificate required.
  • Working knowledge of budget design and accounting procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and, when necessary and appropriate, collaboratively with central and school staff and/or community partners.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to analyze quantitative data to develop reports to monitor implementation status and measure success of key initiatives.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to make effective presentations to diverse audiences.
  • Interpersonal skills that ensure effective teambuilding and networking with outside organizations in support of school-based programs.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office suite; programming experience preferred.
  • Experience as FLL or VEX event partner preferred.
  • Experience troubleshooting problems with technology independently.
  • Experience planning and managing all logistics and details regarding large-scale events, such as robotics competitions.
  • Experience with innovative problem solving, specifically expanding the opportunities that students have to experience robotics and other authentic STEM initiatives.
  • Willing to work nights and weekends as required.
