Chief Medical Officer


Position Summary

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is responsible for providing the professional direction and coordination for all medical services at SCHC as well as the quality of health services delivered to patients. The CMO is responsible for planning, organizing, assembling, directing, monitoring and overseeing the medical resources of SCHC. The position provides quality patient care in an integrated healthcare setting and participates in administrative responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directs and oversees all daily aspects of the clinical functions of the organization

  • Establishes, monitor, and improve the standards of care through performance benchmarks and goals

  • Recommends strategies to enhance clinical performance, effectiveness, efficiencies, productivity, and compliance
  • Develops, implements, monitors, and revises clinical policies and procedures, quality initiatives and practice guidelines in alignment with evidence-based practice and standards of care
  • Ensures clinical compliance with the program requirements of a FQHC
  • Privileges new provider staff
  • Develops, oversees and reports results of peer review in a timely manner
  • Reports on clinical function to the Board of Directors (at least quarterly)
  • Provides patient services during time of facility operation as specified in policies and procedures
  • Provides medical direction for the facility’s healthcare activities and consultation for, and medical supervision of the clinical staff

  • Prescribes medications
  • Provides primary medical care as evidenced by compliance with the following standards:
  • Performs medical examinations, procedures and prescribes medications to patients as assigned or needed
  • Advises patients on health care education issues when needed
  • Effectively and efficiently completes all paperwork requirements for billing and medical records compliance
  • Participate in quality improvement efforts and efforts to maintain Patient Centered Medical Home recognition
  • Maintains professional and congenial attitude toward patients
  • Coordinates with other provider’s programs that address the unmet healthcare needs of a clinical or educational nature
  • Participates in community outreach events
  • Meets professional behavior expectations as evidenced by compliance with the following standards:
  • Meets attendance and punctuality requirements to ensure proper coverage and quality of service
  • Professional and appropriate dress as required by the position
  • Demonstrates an ability to resolve interpersonal and professional conflicts appropriately
  • Ability to formulate decisions and make judgements that are demanding and interpretative
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with the healthcare team members
  • Keeps all matters related to the organization, SCHC and patient, confidential in compliance with the confidentiality policy
  • Performs other duties and accepts other responsibilities as assigned
  • Strong alignment with SCHC Mission and demonstrates behaviors aligned with SCHC Statement of Faith and Core Values
  • Other duties as necessary to ensure successful attainment of SCHC goals and objectives

Job Qualifications and Requirements

  • Degree in Family Medicine from an accredited medical school
  • Active license to practice medicine in the State of Kentucky
  • Board certification in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine or Meds/Peds
  • Must have and maintain current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration
  • Experience providing medical care, particularly with vulnerable and/or diverse population
  • CPR/BLS Certificate
  • Knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Knowledge of electronic health record; preferably NextGen
  • Attend/complete CME annually as directed by the Kentucky State Board of Licensure
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment
  • Ability to work efficiently in a clinical setting to meet productivity requirements
  • Must follow appropriate legal and ethical conduct
  • Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse populations
  • Must have the ability to exercise good judgement in appraising clinical situations and decisions
  • Knowledge of community needs and initiatives and/or experience working in a community health setting or with low-income populations
  • Respect for and appreciation of diversity

Working Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed in clinical area and involves contact with patients
  • Work may be stressful at times. Interaction with others is constant and interruptive. Contact involves dealing with sick persons
  • Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighting up to 30 pounds
  • Requires normal visual acuity and hearing
  • Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours
  • Local travel may be required to attend meetings or visit other SCHC clinics
  • Out-of-town travel may be necessary for conferences and other learning opportunities
