Position Overview

The purpose of the Finance/Payroll Department at S:US is to fulfill the organization’s mission in the most effective and efficient manner and to remain accountable to stakeholders, including clients, partners, funders, employees, and the community. In order to accomplish this, the Finance/Payroll Department commits to providing accurate and complete payroll data for internal and external use by the Executive Team and the Board of Directors.

S:US, a large non-profit organization, is looking for a highly motivated, analytical and reliable Director of Payroll who will be responsible for managing a team of payroll professionals. The candidate will have accountability for the accurate and timely processing of the company’s payroll activities in accordance with federal, state and local regulations and legislative compliance requirements. This position is considered a key liaison among Human Resources, Payroll and Accounting. The Director of Payroll will also be relied upon to troubleshoot issues, collaborate on projects and provide accurate payroll information.

Tis position has a salary range of $145,000 to $160,000 commensurate with salary. We offer a flexible remote schedule.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Payroll Management

  • Direct, manage and oversee the day-to-day payroll operations to ensure timely and accurate processing of all compensation payments in accordance with federal, state and local regulations and legislative compliance requirements for approximately 2,000 salaried and hourly (union and non-union) employees using Kronos payroll system.
  • Oversees, coordinates and directs the timely deduction and payment of all payroll deductions including dues, garnishments and benefit deductions.
  • Maintains payroll processing system and its customizations, be a key liaison during processing changes to improve system functionality and efficiency.
  • Owner of payroll accounting; be an integral part of month/quarter/year end close to reconcile payroll accounts and provide flux analysis.
  • Understands processes and requirements for making payroll-related adjustments or changes (e.g., overpayments, retroactive FTE changes)

Regulatory & Compliance

  • Develop, implement and maintain payroll-related policies and control procedures in accordance with best industry practice.
  • Experience with general ledger (GL) month-end close process, including recording journal entries and knowledge of how payroll transactions affect the GL.
  • Prepare State and Federal census reports. 
  • Annual Workers’ Compensation audit preparation.
  • Monitor and manage payroll related vendor.
  • Ensure W2s are issued accurately and timely.
  • Prepare payroll related materials for external and internal auditors or as requested by management.
  • Communicate government regulations affecting payroll to management. 

Customer Service & Partnership

  • Partner with Human Resources, Accounting and Grant Department to ensure coordination of information between departments and Payroll.
  • Exhibit a kind and professional demeanor with internal and external customers and peers. Listen, anticipate customer needs and go beyond basic service expectation in a timely and helpful manner.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Economics or Finance required
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience and in-depth knowledge of payroll and payroll accounting.
  • A minimum of 5 years of management role with Payroll oversight.
  • Working knowledge of Kronos products is a plus.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft tools (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).
