Self-Help External is Hiring an Executive Staff Near Durham, NC

WHO We Are:

Self-Help started in 1980 with a focus on economic inequality especially in communities that have faced systemic barriers in building wealth. At the core of what Self-Help does is a drive to create and protect ownership and economic opportunity. In other words, we’re committed to economic justice! Economic Justice means that all communities have the basic infrastructure they need to thrive, from high quality schools to grocery stores selling fresh foods resources that support opportunity at a neighborhood level regardless of demographics, income, or wealth. Since our founding, we’ve constantly sought to find new ways to pursue greater economic justice: from providing fair and affordable loans, to working with partners to demand that lawmakers change unjust policies.

Self-Help’s Executive Team is looking for its newest member to help increase our impact. Like the rest of Self-Help, our colleagues have diverse professional backgrounds, educational training, and skillsets they bring to work each day. We are seeking a skilled project manager who is comfortable supporting a broader range of internal and external projects. The projects you support may require quickly getting up to speed in a new area, so being a curious learner, collaborative teammate, and quick study is extremely helpful for these roles.

WHAT You'll DO:

The Executive Staff team member will provide critical project support for initiatives identified by the CEO, Chief of Staff, as well as other organizational leaders. The Executive Staff member will work in a social justice, activist organization on projects that involve complex business, financial, and operational issues. Illustrative projects include:

  • Leading implementation and analysis of an organization-wide Team Climate Survey regarding Self-Help’s core values.
  • Conducting financial or data analysis to inform a new loan product or area for impact.

WHAT You’ll NEED:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years related professional experience in community development, management consulting, finance, banking, non-profit/business management OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Master’s degree in urban planning, public policy, business administration, law, or related field preferred.
  • In depth knowledge of financial analysis and analytical aptitude.
  • Strong Project management ability/skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – demonstrated ability to work effectively in varied professional, socio-economic, and cultural contexts.
  • Highly resourceful self-starter and fast learner.
  • Ability to initiate and juggle multiple projects and work independently to meet goals, objectives, and deadlines.
  • Effective in working behind the scenes. Adept at using influence without authority.
  • Sensitivity to issues of low-wealth borrowers and communities, and a desire to work in a racially and socially diverse organization.
  • Excellent listening skills.
  • Sincere commitment to teamwork and an interest in the development of colleagues, both important Self-Help values.
  • Strong Word, Excel and PowerPoint skills required; data analysis and mapping skills.
  • Willingness to work hours reflective of a CEO-level position and travel approximately 10% although may be higher at times due to the nature of assigned projects.
