SEIU Local 517M is Hiring an Executive Director Near Lansing, MI

The SEIU Local 517M Executive Director position has overall general management responsibilities for daily operational activities of SEIU Local 517M, a public sector union in Michigan. SEIU Local 517M represents approximately 7,000 members and is an affiliate of Service Employees International Union (SEIU) which has 2.2-million-members nationwide. Local 517M is one of four SEIU Locals in the State of Michigan and has an annual operating budget of approximately $3 million with 9 full time staff members.

The SEIU Local 517M Executive Director works under the general direction of the Local 517M Executive Board with primary responsibilities as assigned.

These duties typically include:

  • Daily supervision and management of staff.
  • Oversight and responsibility for the financial records and collaborating with the Executive Officers on financial operations.
  • Oversight of member growth and internal and external organizing activities.
  • Oversight of legislative issues affecting the membership with continuous advocacy with elected and appointed government officials.
  • Coordination of the local’s political operation including SEIU State Council functions as well as International political programs.
  • Oversight of the collective bargaining processes.
  • High-level of communication with the Executive Officers and Executive Board.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of contract administration and bargaining with progressive awareness on the laws of Public Employee Retirement Association (PERA), National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), and the Civil Service Rules and Regulations.
  • Political and legislative advocacy experience.
  • Financial, budgeting, and payroll experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to function and interact in a positive manner with elected leadership, members, media, and staff.
  • Managerial skills and experience with a demonstrable record of relating and working with diverse groups of people.
  • Flexible, highly motivated, and the ability to handle multiple tasks and projects.
  • Ability to work independently within the context of a plan and to meet deadlines in a high-pressure environment.
  • Ability to use basic word processing, database programs, and email.

Education:

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree preferably with an emphasis on Labor and Industrial Relations.

Salary:

Salaried position (commensurate with education and experience)

Position Requirements:

Long and irregular hours, frequent travel, occasional participation in special campaigns that may require longer term travel and overnight stays, must have a valid driver’s license and vehicle.
