Position Summary

The Urban Indian Health Institute, the public health division of Seattle Indian Health Board, is seeking a Fellow to work directly with the Executive Vice President to further our Decolonize Data Work. The Urban Indian Health Institute (UIHI) has embarked on a journey to reclaim the indigenous values of data, evaluation and research as a way to contribute to the health and well-being of tribal people living in urban areas nationwide. The Public Health Fellowship will build upon training and opportunities of the UIHI Public Health Internship to support professional development, technical skill enhancement, and incorporation of indigenous methodologies into a project that will include a draft manuscript for publication. The Public Health Fellow will work under the close mentorship of the Executive Vice President and Special Projects team. Fellow projects will match individual interest with current UIHI needs and will consist of 4 components of working in areas of disease surveillance and chronic disease, HIV/HCV, Public Health Services (suicide, substance misuse prevention, youth and elders),special projects (MMIWG and decolonize data), Indigenous Evaluation Framework and Epidemiologist track(elders brief King county data). Recently completed an educational program looking to gather further knowledge to grow in decolonize data or equivalent community or work experience (growth opportunity)


Organizational Structure/Reporting Relationships

This position reports directly to the UIHI Senior Project Manager in charge of the Special Projects. This position has no direct reports.

Job Responsibilities

  • Further develop the Decolonize Data Framework used by UIHI and Community Partners.
  • Collaborate with Seattle Indian Health Board Policy team on pivotal work around AI/AN data collection methodology with local law enforcement agencies.
  • Work with UIHI Evaluation team to become proficient in the Indigenous Evaluation Framework.
  • Using the Indigenous Evaluation Framework facilitate, evaluate, and support any assigned grant based work.
  • Support evaluation across SIHB Public Health Services programs to secure additional funding and meet current reporting need.
  • Develop a final project that demonstrates gained expertise in the Indigenous Evaluation Framework and incorporates epidemiology work of UIHI
  • At all times supportively collaborate with teams across the organization.
  • Coordinate and participate in outreach activities designed for public awareness of the organization in community.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Background Qualification

Required:

  • Knowledge or familiarity with American Indian/Alaska Native Communities, social causes, and advancements.
  • Master’s degree in Public Health or a related field or a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health or a related field and (1) year of related experience.
  • Working knowledge of Federal Public Health Infrastructure.
  • Ability to communicate effectively when managing competing deadlines.
  • Working knowledge of Office 365.
  • 1-2 years minimum experience in Community Outreach
  • Excellent written communication skills.

Preferred:

  • Experience working large scale events.
  • Team scheduling experience.
  • Master’s degree in Public Health or a related field

Work Environment:

  • SIHB staff work four (4) ten (10) hour shifts per week on site. Standard hours are 7 am to 6 pm, 4 days a week, with occasional extra hours for events or to meet deadlines.
  • Some travel may be required.
