SANITATION FOUNDATION OVERVIEW

The Sanitation Foundation is the official non-profit partner of NYC Sanitation (DSNY). We are on a mission to help make NYC a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable city for all New Yorkers. The Foundation supports the work of DSNY to clean up the city and reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.

We are a fundraising organization that creates and runs programs and events that support the mission of DSNY. We focus on crafting and executing programs that are meaningful, at scale, and impactful. We are supported by private funding, grants, corporate partnerships, and in-kind donations. The Foundation was founded in 2016 and launched with a highly acclaimed fashion show featuring upcycled Sanitation uniforms from Brooklyn-based designer Heron Preston. Since then, we’ve run a variety of programs that have engaged tens of thousands of New Yorkers like The Great Broadway Sweep, Yankees Summer Cleanup Series and NYC Trash Academy. Our new program “Adopt Your Spot NYC” will be introduced during our first annual Big Spring Clean in April 2024.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

This spring, we’ll launch a new program for civic-minded New Yorkers who want to step up to take care of a “spot” that’s especially dear to them, like the side of the block they live on.

• Through an online registration platform, participants choose their spot on a map and make a one-year commitment to maintain that area, when and how they want.
• Each volunteer participant will receive a starter kit with supplies, and can order refills as needed.
• To stay motivated and inspired, there will be a dedicated Facebook group (or other social platform), live meet-ups, insider’s newsletter and an annual get-together with DSNY and Foundation leaders.

ROLE OVERVIEW

Sanitation Foundation is seeking an experienced Program Manager to create, launch, and manage this program. This is a 6-month part-time role, with the potential to extend based on the success of the program roll-out. This self-directed individual will work 10-15 hours per week to help build out, launch and manage this program. The ideal candidate will be collaborative and have interest in cleaning up NYC and community engagement. The position requires some basic marketing experience, social media experience and strong communication skills, as well as basic budgeting and P&L management.

Responsibilities

Research

• Gather information about other “adopt a spot” programs in the US and elsewhere
• Identify key learnings, ideas that can support success, hurdles/challenges to avoid
• If possible, gather info about the number of members demo/psycho, and lifecycle (how long people stay engaged)

Promotional materials

• Help draft and create promotional materials and develop a marketing plan for how we will reach potential members
• Build webpage on the Foundation site, eventually may become a micro-site or stand-alone site
• Create and implement a newsletter - look/feel, cadence, info

Registration

• Create registration materials and figure out how we will organize, track members

Map

• Figure out - short term and long-term - how the Foundation will demonstrate which areas of the city have been “adopted”

Supplies for Members

• Help create a starter supply kit - which items, which materials
• Work with fulfillment vendor on pricing, packaging, mailing
• Create system for re-orders of materials

Community-building

• Identify the right platform to build our community group - i.e., Facebook, Slack
• Create an online group and encourage participation and engagement. Serve as moderator, to answer questions and keep members motivated and informed
• Plan for periodic in-person meet-ups - locations (neighborhood, borough) and frequency, etc.
• Plan an annual event for members - with leaders at DSNY and SF

Budget

• Build a realistic budget
• Track expenses and create monthly P&L report
• Make recommendations on how “donate to the Foundation” options can be built into outreach, registration, and ongoing community materials

Other

• The Program Manager will handle other projects and tasks that may arise as we build out the program that cannot be anticipated at this time

Qualifications

• 5 years of experience in marketing, social media, and communications, preferably with a non-profit.
• 5 years community engagement experience, within non-profit or as a volunteer
• Familiarity with creating budgets and tracking P&L
• Self-starter, entrepreneurial spirit
• Strong interest in cleaning up NYC

Requirements

• The position requires long periods of standing and walking, and ability to easily travel throughout the five boroughs of New York City
• Must be available weekends and evenings based on Program needs

Compensation

• $32-$37/hour, based on experience
