Job Summary:

The AT&T Director of Education leads departmental efforts that position the museum as a national leader in museum education and visual arts education. In collaboration with the Kelso Director and other members of the Strategic Leadership team, the Director of Education participates in institutional planning and initiatives while championing innovation in lifelong learning and directing a balanced

calendar of museum programs that align with the Museum’s strategic plan. The Director of Education provides creative leadership that strengthens collaboration between Museum departments. 

The Director of Education leads a reinvigorated department of dedicated educators responsible for delivering responsive, relevant, and diverse programming and interpretation in a visitor-centered, welcoming environment. This includes a special emphasis on intergenerational experiences and multimodal learning.

In collaboration with the Advancement Department and Business Office, the Director of Education is responsible for monitoring all aspects of the department’s operating and program budgets to ensure alignment with Museum priorities, as well as related components of special exhibition budgets, and including grant requests, awards, and reports.

The Director of Education seeks to strengthen and build upon existing collaborative and effective community partnerships throughout the San Antonio community. The Director of Education works to extend the museum’s reach by presenting at state, regional and national conferences as well as participating in state and national organizations at a leadership level.

Primary Responsibilities:

Employs a visitor-centered approach, creative and collaborative leadership, and best practices in museum education at all times in order to:

  • Work collaboratively with Strategic Leadership in the planning and implementation of museum goals, policies, and initiatives that support the mission and strategic plan.
  • Provide information and statistics, write narratives, and develop budgets for grant applications in support of Advancement Department and Museum philanthropic goals.
  • Lead the Education Department in the development of innovative programs to activate the permanent collection and special exhibitions, balancing impact and attendance goals, in support of the Curatorial department.
  • Work in collaboration to carry out long-range calendar planning, prioritizing quality, sustainability, and community impact in support of the Marketing department.
  • Collaborate with curators and the Senior Manager of Academic and Community Learning and the Volunteer Services Coordinator to develop curriculum and objectives for new docents and other museum volunteers. Support continuing docent education initiatives and participate in Docent Council.
  • Stay current with museum education and art education pedagogy and ensure the Education department employs best practices in early childhood, intergenerational, and gallery teaching for museums.
  • Lead and support Education staff members in developing high- caliber, interpretive content for programs, collateral/publications, tours, workshops, and online resources.
  • Support staff in ensuring alignment with Museum mission and strategic goals.
  • Oversee program delivery and evaluation.
  • Develop annual operating and programs budgets, align program budgets with grant awards.
  • Prepare timely reports and statistical summaries for programs and grant awards, conduct surveys and studies as needed.
  • Serve as Co-Staff Liaison for the Board committee for Community Engagement and Government Affairs.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in studio art, art history, or art education.
  • Three years supervisory experience in museum education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in art history, museum education, and studio art, as well as learner- centered museum interpretation strategies.
  • Demonstrated thought leader in the field of museum education.
  • Knowledge of business management and finance principles.
  • Five years teaching experience in both museum and classroom settings.
  • Demonstrated commitment to values of diversity, equity, access, and inclusion in museums.
  • Experience in creating and facilitating professional development for educators.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop interdisciplinary, participatory museum curriculum for PreK-12 and college/university learners using current pedagogy and best practices for museum education.
  • Adept in creating innovative, engaging museum programs for all audiences.
  • Demonstrated institutional leadership experience, as well as at the state and national level in museum education and/or art education.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills, outstanding interpersonal skills to complement a collaborative working environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with internal and external stakeholders, ability to motivate staff and develop leadership within a team, collaborative work style.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with museum staff, visitors, and colleagues of all ages, interests, and backgrounds.
  • Proven project management skills, ability to work well within deadlines on multiple and varied projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated research, writing, evaluation, and information management skills.
  • Proficiency with digital technology, new and emerging media, current social media, and learning management systems.

 

Physical Requirements:

The physical requirements of the position described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform successfully.

  • Working onsite at a desk in a lightly-renovated historic building on a 12 acre campus.
  • Standing, walking, bending, climbing, stooping, and lifting up to 20 lbs.
  • Good hearing and vision, and eye-hand coordination.
