Position Title: Instructional Assistant, Head Start

Job Title: Instructional Assistant

Reports to: Campus Principal Pay Grade: N01

Terms of • 183 days per year. FLSA Classification: Non-exempt
Employment: • At-Will employment agreement.

  • Salary is in the pay grade N01 on the Non-

exempt SAISD Compensation Plan.

  • Entry hourly rate is at $16.50 with consideration
for directly related experience.

Position Summary
Assist with the care and instruction of pre-school age children in activities designed to promote the social,
emotional, physical, and cognitive development of Head Start students in a positive, safe, and supervised learning
environment.
Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities

1. Provide assigned instructional assistance and tasks under the general supervision of a certified teacher or
teaching team, including assistance with supervision of students, planning and delivery of instruction.

2. Assist with the physical care of children (toileting, meals, sanitation, etc).
3. Assist in the implementation of activities which foster the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical

development of children.
4. Work cooperatively with teachers and staff to ensure safe, healthy, and developmentally appropriate

mealtime experiences for children.
5. Work with parents/families as the primary educator in their child’s education.
6. Compiles, maintains, and files all reports, records, and other required documents.
7. Attend and participate in faculty and Head Start program meetings as needed/required.
8. Perform other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilities expected

for this position.

Minimum Requirements
• Must have one of the following educational requirements:

o Associates degree or higher from an accredited college/university.

o A minimum of forty-eight (48) semester college hours from an accredited college or university
o High school diploma or GED equivalent recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional

accrediting agency and ESSA/Treasuring Our Paraprofessionals certificate/Region XX
o High school diploma or GED equivalent recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional

accrediting agency and passed the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE)

• Valid CDA (Child Development Associate) credential.

o In addition to the requirements stated above, applicants who want to be considered for IA Head Start
will need to obtain a CDA credential within 2 years of employment for the assignment.

  • Eligible to obtain a paraprofessional certificate issued by the State Board of Educator Certification.
  • First Aid and CPR certified or ability to certify within 30 days of employment.
  • Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee

(approximately $50.00) paid by the employee.

Preferred Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university.

Working Conditions
Work Environment:

  • Computer, computer software programs and peripherals, teacher resource materials and
equipment, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position.
  • Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise. Occasional
exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.

Physical Demands/Requirements:

  • Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions/deadlines; frequent sitting,
standing, walking, climbing, balancing, pulling and pushing; reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing,
speaking clearly, visual acuity and prolonged data input; occasional lift/carry light, moderate 15-44 pounds.
