Description

The Systems Engineer is responsible for the implementation, administration, monitoring, support, and maintenance of the enterprise IT infrastructure, including Windows Servers, Azure AD services, Linux services, storage infrastructure, firewall operations, and network infrastructure that is a combination of on-premises, cloud-based, and externally managed services, and infrastructure. The Systems Engineer is a point of contact for vendor partners, providing managed and maintenance services, including networking, telephone, ERP, and information security. The Systems Engineer works closely with other IT colleagues to deliver a broad suite of technology services to the campus community. The Systems Engineer is expected to be proficient at troubleshooting issues and serve at the highest level of escalation within Technology Services.
Job Duties

1. The Systems Engineer is considered a critical employee but will only receive that designation as needed. As a critical employee, the Sr. System and Network Administrator may be required to work even when the university officially closes.
2. Provide system administration and DBA services for Microsoft SQL and MySQL servers.
3. Provide system administration for Samford's Microsoft file and print services.
4. Provide system administration for Samford's two VMware clusters.
5. Program, maintain, and review the user provisioning process for Microsoft Active Directory, and
Office 365.
6. Provide system administration for Samford's two VMware clusters.
7. Install and configure server and storage hardware
8. Ensure that nightly backups are performed and support current disaster recovery operations.
9. Perform UNIX/Linux server installation, upgrades, and configuration changes.
10. Perform Windows server installation, upgrades, and configuration changes.
11. Provide network system administration for fiber channel switches, data center switches, and the university firewall.
12. Provide system administration for storage array networks and network-attached storage.
13. Support current technology operations by automating system maintenance and operations.
14. Plan, test, and install upgrades as the various application administrators request.
15. Serve as the administrator for the email security gateway.
16. Work with customers to assess and respond quickly to any issue affecting an enterprise system.
17. Proficient at using shell scripting or Windows Power Shell tools to solve problems.
18. Schedules and implements change control processes to implement upgrades and changes successfully.
19. Maintaining up-to-date documentation for starting/stopping servers and applications.
20. Maintain confidential information or confidential issues, with discretion.
21. Provide the Assistant Director of Network and Systems Infrastructure with a weekly status report on projects and tasks for the week.
22. Assist with any project or task as directed by the Assistant Director of Network and Systems Infrastructure.
23. Documents all issues and maintenance-related activities in the Technology Services ticket management system.
24. Participate in the on-call rotation as assigned by the Assistant Director of Network and Systems Infrastructure.
25. Ensure continuous technology operations by monitoring all infrastructure and services and responding to issues promptly.
26. Provides strong customer service.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in a technology-related field and 5 years' experience working independently in programming, system administration, or computer and network operations
10 years' experience working independently in programming, System administration, or computer and network operations will be accepted in place of the degree and 5-year experience requirement
Minimum Skills/Aptitudes: Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong commitment to Christian principles; ability to work harmoniously with and communicate effectively with faculty, staff, administration, and students; ability to work cooperatively and supervise the work of others; knowledge of server technologies, operating System and services such as Unix (and its variations), Windows Server, Oracle, and others.
