Description

The Samford University Performance Management Team oversees the operation of the University's performance venues - The Wright Center, Brock Recital Hall, Reid Chapel, and others as needed. This position assists in the production of concerts, lectures, musicals, dance shows, plays, etc. Applicants are expected to have experience in one or more of the following areas of technical production - audio, lighting, video, stage management, and/or rigging. The job responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, running audio, leading light hang and focus, managing load-ins/outs, installing and running multimedia equipment, connecting computers, managing rehearsals and performances, etc. Due to the nature of the live-events industry, the work hours will be irregular and scheduled as needed.
Job Duties

Stage Manager
  • Overall duties will include stage management, ensuring smooth and efficient rehearsals and execution of performances, including calling shows.
  • Assists in the coordination and direction of the work of technical crew, set-up and strike and work assignments.
  • Acts as a liaison between the various crews involved in backstage production.
  • Coordinates, oversees, and/or directs the set-up of stages.
  • During the rehearsal process, records all of the blocking, lighting cues, prop usage, costume changes, and entrances of the performers.
  • Communicates with the front-of-house manager regarding house open, show start and resumption of show after intermission.
  • Oversees the space to accommodate clients.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Audio
  • Sets up sound reinforcement, including microphones, cables and monitors, and in-ear monitors for rehearsals, performances, worship services, lectures, various theatre, opera, meetings, choral and music concerts, dance, variety shows and other university and external events.
  • Operates FOH mixing console to maintain appropriate audio-levels and intelligibility of sound for audience and stage, as well as live streams as needed.
  • Builds cue lists and operates sound playback
  • Produce recordings of events as needed
  • Ensures that audio equipment is in proper working condition for assigned performances and events.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Lighting
  • Sets up and operates theatrical/stage lighting equipment including light hang & focus, circuiting, cabling, and/or operating a spotlight.
  • Reads light plots provided by events.
  • Maintains and restores House Light Plot.
  • Ensures that lighting equipment is in proper clean working condition.
  • Designs and implements lighting for a variety of events.
  • Operates a variety of lighting consoles and writes cues into board.
  • Performs basic troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment being used.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Video/Audiovisual
  • Operates projector and video switcher for screenings and presentations.
  • Operates video playback and builds cue lists.
  • Connects and troubleshoots computers needed for presentations.
  • Working knowledge of video resolutions, frame rates and format conversion.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Flyman/Rigger
  • Coordinates and/or directs the safe setup, installation, use and maintenance of rigging equipment, used during scheduled events.
  • Coordinates and/or directs the delivery, set up, operation, dismantling and striking of rigging and rigging equipment needed for scheduled events.
  • Load/Unload weight from fly rail loading bridge.
  • Rigs all scenery.
  • Operates the fly rail.
  • Hangs points, call bridles and ties knots.
  • Hangs soft goods and hard set pieces.
  • Operates rigging equipment during load-ins, shows and load-outs.
  • Assists outside company riggers to install and Strikes equipment.
  • Identifies any additional rigging equipment that may be required.
  • Performs basic troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment being used.
  • Always adheres to safety standards for rigging equipment and uses safe working methods.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of experience working in technical performing arts operations or relevant field.
  • Knowledge of -
    • Operational characteristics, techniques, principles, and practices used in stage production sound, lighting, video, rigging, management, and/or equipment and tools.
    • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability to -
    • Follow established backstage health, safety, and operational practices and procedures.
    • Manage time effectively and handle workload in an accurate and efficient manner.
    • Communicate clearly and concisely.
    • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
    • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
    • Advise and interact effectively with technical and non-technical workers, faculty, students, outside renters and volunteers.
    • Maintain strong detail orientation, be flexible and adaptable under varied conditions and requirements, think quickly and problem-solve, and maintain composure/perform well under pressure.
    • Work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, and long hours.
    • Perform physically demanding technical duties:
      • Walk, sit, or stand for prolonged periods of time.
      • Lift and/or carry up to 50 lbs.
      • Bend, stoop, kneel, and/or crawl.
  • Work at heights - ceiling grid, ladders, and/or genie lift.
  • Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with Yamaha digital consoles, Beringer X32 Mixer, Qlab, ProPresenter, and/or DANTE.
    • Experience with ETC Ion lighting console and/or Chauvet.
    • Experience with operation of Blackmagic ATEM video switchers and converters, Qlab, ProPresenter, and/or Powerpoint.
