Associates degree, 60 college hours, with no experience required. Library experience would be helpful. Nature & Purpose of Position
Assists with sorting, organizing, and digitizing documents and images in SHSU University Archives. Provides staffing support for SHSU University Archives as the assistant to the University Archivist. Provides back-up to University Archivist in patron services and instruction in absence of the library associate. Position involves detailed preservation, processing, and description of archival materials and general interaction with the researching public. Provides responsible technical, supervisory, and public services skills necessary in the operation of a specific work unit in the university library. Responsible for performing specialized duties requiring advanced operational skills and technical knowledge of library practices and procedures. Primary Responsibilities
Works with the University Archivist to sort, organize, and provide access to items and collections located in SHSU University Archives at Newton Gresham Library. Assists students, faculty, staff, and community patrons with locating and interpreting information resources located in University Archives and Newton Gresham Library. Adheres to the policies and procedures for SHSU University Archives. Under the supervision of the University Archivist, this position organizes and describes University Archives material. Performs routine preservation work as needed. Assists with creating finding aids of archival materials according to archival best practices and metadata standards to be uploaded to SHSU's ArchiveSpace database. Creates and describes digital objects/collections for ContentDM as needed. Periodically assists with planning and installing library exhibits. Aids with supervision of student assistant(s) in the absence of the University Archivist. Performs other duties as assigned. Other Specifications
Familiarity with scanning. Must have computer skills and an ability to learn new programs. Must be detail oriented. A willingness to work with others because some projects may be large-scale with lengthy duration. Must be able to prioritize, exercise initiative, use good judgement, and work independently. Must be able to carry boxes, load and push book trucks, and shelve books. Work schedules are generally 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. (40 hours per week). However, work schedules may vary according to library needs which include evening work and weekends. This position is in a controlled environment where the temperature and humidity remain constant for the preservation of the archival collection. Periodically, this position may work with materials that contain dust and mold. Up to 20% of this position, over the fiscal year during off-peak periods, may be performed remotely as determined by the supervisor. Full Time Part Time Full Time
