Sacramento LGBT Community Center is Hiring a Youth Advocate Near Sacramento, CA

REPORTS TO:Director of Youth and FamilyPrograms

STATUS:Non-Exempt, Full-time 

COMPENSATION:$21.00 per hour

LOCATION:Sacramento, CA

JOB SUMMARY:

The Youth Advocate will work directly with youth, including Q-Spot youth center, virtual spaces, plan and participate in youth events and programming, youth outreach and help connect youth to resources using a client centered approach. It is the goal of the Youth Advocate to provide peer support to vulnerable LGBTQ youth to decrease isolation and improve overall mental health and well-being.

ANTICIPATED SCHEDULE: (schedule may change based on the needs of the program)

Sunday– Monday 10:00am-6:30pm

Tuesday- Wednesday 11:30am-8:00pm

Thursday- 10:00am-6:30pm

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Complete intakes for the Q-Spot drop-in center both in person and virtually and determines eligibility for Center’s housing programs.
  • Staff the Q-Spot drop-in center and help with daily tasks such as coordinating showers, distributing clothing and supplies, helping youth use the washer/dryer, and cooking food.
  • Provide resource referrals based on youth needs.
  • Ensure that youth are provided with a safe and affirming space to learn and develop the skills to make positive life choices regarding their own health and well-being.
  • Support youth with developing an action plan, accessing personal and community supports to reach youth identified goals.
  • Share experience and expertise through specialized life skills workshops.
  • Develop and plan interactive youth programming in collaboration with team and supervisor.
  • Track demographics, progress on action plan, and successful connection to resources.
  • Act as a lead facilitator for at least one youth group weekly.
  • Serve as a role model for LGBTQ youth and encourages youth to incorporate positive life choices within their own lives.
  • Maintain healthy boundaries with youth that are experiencing homelessness, addiction, sexual/physical assault, bullying, and mental health crisis.
  • Moderate online discussion between LGBTQ youth via Discord.
  • Complete data entry within agency guidelines.
  • Provide support with youth related grant reporting, in collaboration with supervisor.
  • Event and program planning that serves diverse LGBTQ community members.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Youth, Family, and Adult Programs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of Trauma-Informed care, Positive Youth Development, and Harm Reduction models.
  • Experience working with LGBTQ populations and a familiarity with issues of particular relevance to the diversity of identities within the LGBTQ community.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, socio-economic backgrounds, religions, ages, English-speaking abilities, immigration status, and physical abilities in a multicultural environment; Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Bilingual fluency in English and one or more other languages is preferred.
  • Proficient working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, client services databases, and social media tools.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • GED or High school diploma.
  • 1 year of experience working with underserved youth.
  • Passion for the Center’s mission and work to create a region where LGBTQ people thrive and a commitment to follow all policies and procedures of the organization.
  • Flexibility to work evening and weekend hours as needed.
  • If not already certified the candidate must receive and pass the CPR/First Aid within the first three months of employment.
  • The person in this position may be required to sit or stand for extended periods, maneuver tight storage space, ascend/descend stairs, operate computers, copiers, and other office equipment, open and close filing cabinets and boxes, observe visitors, and communicate messages and tone by telephone.
  • Offer of employment may be contingent on satisfactory results of a criminal history background check.
  • Employees must be legally permitted to work in the United States.
  • The Sacramento LGBT Community Center is a drug free workplace; employees may be subject to a drug test.
