GENERAL SUMMARY

The Risk Manager establishes and implements an effective Risk Management program including organizing, implementing and evaluating the hospital’s comprehensive Risk Management Program including risk evaluation, application of risk reduction strategies to mitigate risk. The Risk Manager participates in reinforcing the culture of patient safety preventing avoidable harm. The Risk Manager is authorized to implement all necessary actions to ensure achievement of the objectives of an effective risk program. Works closely with senior leadership, medical staff leadership and the quality department. The Risk Manager reports to the Chief Quality Officer.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Performs risk management assessments and evaluations to identify risks.
• Identify potential areas of vulnerability and risk, develop and implement corrective action plans for resolution of problematic issues, and provide general guidance on how to avoid or deal with similar situations in the future.
• Manage day-to-day operation of the risk management program. Develops Enterprise Risk Management tools, practices and policies for the organization.
• Reviews, evaluates and recommends action on risk related matters pertaining to patients, visitors, employees, students, physical plant and personal property. Oversees and manages appropriate communication and disclosure to patients.
• Review reports on a regular basis (at least quarterly) with senior leadership, and as directed or requested, keep the various hospital committees and senior leadership informed of risk management mitigation efforts.
• Coordinates and investigates of serious adverse events (SAE), including potentially reportable incidents and provides documentation of all related data and facilitates resolution of reported incidents. Follow up with incident/occurrence reports, including investigation, Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and corrective action/resolution of concerns.
• Oversees the incident reporting system, manages and delegates appropriate investigations, develops reporting and improvement processes.
• Work with RCH insurance carriers; prepares risk identification reports and maintain appropriate insurance for all activities within RCH.
• Serves as the primary resource for resolving patient and safety complaints and mitigating loss through effective and compassionate communication, oversees the incident reporting system, manages and delegates appropriate investigations, develops reporting and improvement processes.
• Provide direction, guidance, support, and assistance to leadership. Work collaboratively with the senior leader team to assure delivery of comprehensive risk management services.
• Analyze risk data and collaborate with the leadership in the development of strategies, solutions, changes in practice and action plans to minimize the probability of adverse events.
• Work with the Human Resources Department and others as appropriate to develop an effective risk training program, including appropriate introductory training for new employees and ongoing training for all employees and manager.
• Responsible for establishment of a comprehensive Loss Prevention program.
• Conduct claim audits focusing on clinical risk exposure.
• Maintains risk management information system database.
• Ensure effective training and education to promote ethical conduct and commitment to compliance with the law.
• Consult with external General Counsel as needed to resolve legal issues.
• Collaborate with other departments or appropriate existing channels for investigation and resolution of issues.
• Participate in contract review for physicians and vendors.
• Assist in developing and managing Risk department budget within guidelines and completes capital expenditure needs requests.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES REQUIRED:

· Graduate education in hospital administration, business administration, law (Juris Doctor or equivalent); or other legal training desirable.

· RN or other health care licensure, or clinical experience in healthcare related field preferred, not required.

· Seven years of previous risk management, legal, or compliance experience required; recent health care experience preferred.

· Enterprise Risk Management experience preferred

· Knowledge of federal and Illinois law related to health care.
