Roanoke City Public Schools is Hiring a Teacher Residency Program Near Roanoke, VA

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Roanoke Teacher Residency Program (RTR) leadership team, the RTR Resident plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students in high-needs and hard-to-staff schools. The Resident creates an atmosphere conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of individuals to ensure the success of every student. They supervise students in various school-related settings, monitor and evaluate student outcomes, and communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and the community. The Resident develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the diverse needs of all students and maintains accurate records while following required procedures and practices. Additionally, they ensure the appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

The following duties are typical for this position. While this list aims to be comprehensive, other duties may be required and assigned as needed:

  • Plan and implement an instructional program tailored to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of students from historically marginalized communities.
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes regularly and consistently, following the program schedule.
  • Create an engaging classroom environment that encourages student involvement in the learning process and facilitates the achievement of learning objectives.
  • Prepare thoroughly for assigned classes and provide evidence of preparation as requested.
  • Guide the learning process towards the achievement of curriculum goals and establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects.
  • Utilize instructional methods, resources, and evaluation techniques that motivate and enable each student to achieve learning objectives.
  • Take necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate records and complete records as required by program policies and regulations.
  • Assist in implementing program policies and rules governing student conduct and develop and maintain fair and just classroom behavior and procedures.
  • Be available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day as required or requested.
  • Establish positive relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and the community.
  • Plan and supervise assignments for teacher assistants, tutors, and volunteers.
  • Reflect on personal effectiveness and strive to improve professional competence.
  • Participate in program management and contribute to the overall success of the program.
  • Attend program meetings and serve on committees as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

The ideal candidate should possess the following:

  • Knowledge of effective instructional practices, curriculum frameworks, and educational policies.
  • Ability to integrate technology into curriculum delivery.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of culturally responsive education practices and the ability to reflect multiple perspectives.
  • Collaboration skills to work effectively with colleagues, administrators, students, parents, and the community.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • When the program is complete, must have or be eligible for teacher licensure from the Virginia Department of Education.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The position may involve significant physical activity, including standing, walking, moving, bending, kneeling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling. The teaching environment may require light work, vocal communication, hearing, and visual acuity. Reasonable accommodation will be made for individuals with disabilities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment primarily consists of controlled temperature and clean classroom settings. Some exposure to outside elements may occur during transitions, field trips, and recess.
