Roanoke City Public Schools is Hiring a Mentor - Targeted School Improvement (10.5 Month Position) Near Roanoke, VA

Position Overview: Targeted School Improvement Mentors are integral members of the Instructional Leadership Team (ILT). They provide vital support to schools in their implementation of school improvements plans, focusing on enhancing teacher effectiveness and driving improvements in student achievement. This role involves mentoring, coaching, facilitating professional development, and actively participating in the school's instructional leadership team. Targeted School Improvement Mentor reports to the Targeted School Improvement Supervisor.
Duties And Responsibilities
  • Plan and lead professional learning community (PLC) meetings, ensuring they are productive and aligned with school improvement objectives.
  • Provide coaching and ongoing support to teachers based on insights gained from PLC meetings, tailored to address individual and collective needs.
  • Analyze relevant data to inform the development and refinement of school improvement goals, collaborating with teachers and administrators.
  • Conduct classroom observations and deliver constructive feedback to teachers to enhance instructional practices and student outcomes.
  • Deliver demonstration lessons and engage in team teaching activities to model effective teaching strategies and foster professional growth among educators.
  • Actively participate in weekly instructional leadership team meetings, contributing insights and collaborating with colleagues to drive school-wide improvement efforts.
  • Allocate at least 75% of working time to direct classroom engagement, prioritizing hands-on support and interaction with students and teachers.
  • Meet established milestones, including timely completion of Rocks (45-day goals), to ensure objectives are met efficiently and effectively.
Qualifications and Experience: Minimum Qualifications:
  • A minimum of five years of successful teaching experience, supported by documented evidence of effectiveness in improving student outcomes.
  • Demonstrated expertise in understanding educators' needs and a proven track record of working directly with teachers to achieve gains in student achievement.
  • Experience in facilitating professional development meetings, with a focus on promoting collaboration and continuous improvement among educators.
  • Proficiency in cognitive coaching techniques for adults, enabling effective support and guidance tailored to individual learning styles and needs.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate others to strive for ambitious goals, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous growth within the school community.
  • Proficiency in relevant software and technology tools, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), to support project implementation and data analysis.
  • Bachelor's degree is required; a master's degree in education or a related field is preferred, providing additional depth of knowledge and expertise.
Targeted School Improvement Mentors play a critical role in driving positive change within schools, leveraging their expertise and leadership to empower educators and enhance student learning outcomes.
Physical RequirementsOccasional operation of automated computer office equipment is required. Attendance to meetings outside the normal duty hours is sometimes required. Regular involvement made with principals and teachers throughout the School Division. Usually there is a need to motivate, establish rapport, gain support, or persuade or influence individuals or groups. Occasional debate is often characteristic of the contact and may require considerable skill in diplomacy, tact, and discretion. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential tasks.
WORK ENVIRONNMENTDuties performed typically in school settings to include: classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium, and recreational areas. Primarily controlled temperature and clean classroom environment.
