The Maintenance Operator performs skilled labor operating heavy motorized equipment in the construction, reconstruction, repair, snow removal and bituminous work on County roads. When not assigned to operate equipment, incumbent may be assigned to perform general labor, flagging and maintenance on equipment or assisting other workers on the job. At the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor the Operator responds to roadway emergencies (snowfall, flooding, traffic accidents, spills, etc.), which may include call backs before and after scheduled work hours. 

• Maintains County roadways by grading, shaping and cleaning roads, ditches and shoulders in the summer months and repairing asphalt pavement throughout the year.
• Maintains safe conditions on County roads during winter months by plowing snow and applying salt/sand mixture to roads. 
• Assists in emergency response efforts of Fire or Sheriff’s Department with heavy equipment or other needs. Cooperates with local agencies: Fire, Police, Sheriff, State Highway Dept., DNR and contractors. 
• Performs routine maintenance on all equipment. 
• Provides input on new equipment purchases, planning projects for budgetary projections and project planning. 
• Trains and directs new and temporary employees. 
• Performs other duties and tasks as assigned. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, and one to three years of highway maintenance and construction, and snow removal process and equipment experience, or equivalent. A valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required upon hire.

Within six months of hire, the incumbent must have successfully completed Tanker endorsement, Overhead Crane, Excavation Competent Person Certification, MSHA Miners Safety and Work Zone Safety courses, and maintains annual certifications. This position is subject to DOT random drug testing. HOURS: Summer hours are 6:00am - 4:30pm, Monday - Thursday, 40hrs per week. Winter hours are 7:00am - 3:30pm, Monday - Friday. HIRING RANGE / UNION: $23.49 - $24.62 / 49ers – Grade 7SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: The position requires Maintenance Operators work in the field in all weather conditions. Must have ability to walk, stand, kneel, or squat frequently, and must lift or carry 25 lbs. occasionally and up to 60 lbs. intermittently. Frequent exposure to construction equipment and noise, hazards at construction sites, pesticides and other chemicals, and extreme weather and other outdoor conditions. Some work at heights required. Position requires Maintenance Operators to work weekends, nights, and holidays as required by weather and road maintenance conditions.
