Red Mesa Science & Refining is a large-scale raw materials manufacturer and supplier of CBD and CBG isolate and distillate as well as several other minor cannabinoids. As a B2B producer our customers are wholesale end product formulating businesses that specialize in contract manufacturing, white labeling and private labeling activities. We are searching for a talented and experienced Senior Manufacturing Engineer.

This position is located in St. George, Utah. This is beautiful red rock country surrounded by world-famous national and state parks, reservoirs, trails and mountains. In 2022, St. George hosted the IRONMAN World Championships along with several other world-class athletic and ATV/Jeep events. Red Mesa Science and Refining is looking for an innovative and passionate individual to join our operations team. This individual will be responsible for overseeing the development of and adherence to safety processes and procedures. Additional qualifications, responsibilities and authorities are described in the tables below.

Shifts for this position are 9:00am – 5:00pm, Monday – Friday.

Position Overview:

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety protocols and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and promote a safe working environment within the chemical manufacturing facility. This role requires a deep understanding of chemical processes, hazards, and regulatory requirements to effectively mitigate risks associated with chemical manufacturing operations. Red Mesa Science and Refining is consistently using process solvents, chemical reactants, pressure, vacuum, and varying low to high temperature daily.

Key Responsibilities:

Regulatory Compliance

  • Stay abreast of local, state, and federal regulations related to chemical manufacturing, including OSHA, EPA, GMP, and other relevant agencies.
  • Interpret and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements applicable to chemical handling, storage, transportation, and disposal by maintaining all appropriate documentation and procedures required.

Safety Program Development and Implementation

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive safety programs tailored to the specific hazards associated with chemical manufacturing processes.
  • Conduct regular audits and inspections to assess compliance with safety policies and procedures.
  • Identify areas for improvement and develop corrective action plans to address safety deficiencies.

Risk Assessment and Hazard Mitigation

  • Conduct thorough risk assessments of chemical manufacturing processes and identify potential hazards.
  • Develop strategies to mitigate risks, including engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Implement measures to minimize the potential for chemical spills, releases, and accidents.
  • Participate in an advisory capacity for new processes and equipment development for safety protocols and interlocks.
  • Develops methods for predicting hazards from historical data, workplace analyses and other sources. Identifies potential hazards associated with existing and planned systems, equipment, products, facilities, and processes.

Training and Education

  • Develop and deliver comprehensive training programs on chemical safety protocols, emergency response procedures, and hazard communication for employees involved in chemical manufacturing.
  • Ensure all personnel are adequately trained in the safe handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals.
  • Provide ongoing education and awareness campaigns to promote a culture of safety throughout the organization.

Emergency Preparedness and Response

  • Develop emergency response plans specific to chemical manufacturing operations, including procedures for spills, leaks, fires, and other incidents.
  • Conduct drills and exercises to test the effectiveness of emergency response protocols and identify areas for improvement.
  • Coordinate with local emergency responders and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with reporting requirements and facilitate timely responses to emergencies.

Environmental Management

  • Collaborate with environmental specialists to manage hazardous waste disposal, emissions monitoring, and pollution prevention efforts.
  • Implement initiatives to minimize the environmental impact of chemical manufacturing processes, such as waste reduction and recycling programs.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental permits and regulatory requirements related to air, water, soil, and hazardous waste handling.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, occupational health and safety, chemistry, or a related field. Advanced degree or professional certification (e.g., Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist) preferred.
  • Extensive experience in chemical manufacturing operations, with a strong understanding of chemical hazards, processes, and safety protocols.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant regulations, including OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM), EPA Risk Management Program (RMP), and hazardous materials transportation regulations (RCRA).
  • Proven ability to develop and implement effective safety programs, conduct risk assessments, and lead emergency response efforts.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively train and educate employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities, with a keen attention to detail and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders, including regulatory agencies and emergency responders.
  • Experience with high-risk work activities and risk mitigation (e.g. confined space entry, work at heights, etc.)
  • Must be able to work independently and resolve practical problems.

Must be at least 18 years of age and must pass UT and Federal background checks.

Pay commensurate with experience.
