POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Develops, organizes and implements high quality YMCA Achievement Gap programs, specifically for the POWER SCHOLARS ACADEMY™ program.

We are hiring in the following areas:

    *Sports/Dance *Nutrition/Wellness *Art *Communication/Journalism *Drama *Foreign Language *Music *STEM

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Developing and implementing appropriate enrichment classes for assigned grade levels.

2. Preparing classrooms for daily activities and collaborating with academic teachers and teacher’s assistants to ensure that objectives are reached.

3. Maintaining accurate classroom records.

4. Provides for upkeep of assigned program facilities and equipment and ensures the physical environment supports healthy living.

5. Adhering to all Power Scholar Academy and district professional expectations and compliance issues.

6. Creating a positive, achievement-oriented, organized and engaging learning environment.

7. Motivating and holding scholars to high academic and behavioral expectations.

8. Providing consistent rewards and/or consequences for scholar behavior grounded in positive discipline.

9. Empowering scholars to make positive choices and serving as a role model.

10.Being accountable for meeting scholars’ individual academic and instructional needs.

11. Ensuring enrichment goals are met for each scholar.

12.Creating and directing project based learning.

13. Mentoring and supporting the professional development of the teacher’s assistants.

14.Supervising scholars during guest speaker engagements, field trips, lunch and recess.

15.Assures compliance with federal, state and local regulations as they relate to program areas, including ADA accommodations where appropriate. Ensures that YMCA program standards are met and safety procedures followed.

16. Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents, children and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.

17.Reports all agency, parent and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner to Child Care Manager.

18. Maintains proper records/department files.

19. Attends staff meetings and trainings.

20.Assists in special events for parents. Assists in YMCA fund raising activities.

21.Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information.

22. Performs other duties as assigned.

Has the functional and technical knowledge and skills required to perform well; uses best practices and demonstrates up-to-date knowledge and skills in technology.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Must be at least 21 years of age.

2. Minimum of two years teaching/childcare experience with children in grades K-5.

3. At least two years of education in a child-related field. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

4. Enrichment skill set in one of the above listed categories (creative skill sets in another enrichment area may be considered).

5. Commitment to teamwork and collaboration with diverse populations.

6. Desire to work with elementary scholars and their families in under-resourced communities.

7. Outstanding verbal, written, and technological (computer/internet) skills.

8. Ability to build relationships and influence scholars, staff, community members & families.

9. Demonstrated leadership ability.

10. Excellent organizational and communication skills.

11.Committed to the goals of the program and approach.

12. Love and respect for children.

13. Evidence of efficacy and willingness to be a team player.

14. Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.

15.Belief and commitment to the Y’s mission and values.

16. Within 30 days of hire include completion of: Child Abuse Prevention for Supervisory Staff; State Licensing Training Requirements; CPR; First Aid; AED; Bloodborne Pathogens.

17.Completes Praesidium within 7 days of hire date.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

1. Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.

2. Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.

3. Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight.

4. Must be able to lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.

5. Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.

6. Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.

7. Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.

8. Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency

9. Ability to view/enter data for long periods of time.

11.Ability to plan, lead and participate in activities

Available shifts and compensation: Available shifts all days except Sundays and Saturdays. Compensation is $18.00 - $19.00/hour.
